Ok, I am trying to decide how to build my next system... I have deicide I will be sporting 2 gigs of DDR.... and I want to be able to expand to use SATA at some time in the future, and I also like having onboard IDE raid (simular to my servers A7V133 board with the Promise 100).

With that in mind... I have to decide between Intel and AMD....

I am considering a dual processor system, but I am not sure on actual gains that would be seen, and am only interested in exploring that option.

I want to have 1mb of L2, I could settle for 512kb if there was an excelent deal on the proc.

With those things in mind, I want to try to keep the Mobo and proc around $400, but, again if it is an awesome deal, I might go up to $500.

I want to keep the overall system cost below $1000.

I already have a HDD (80 gig, thanks to Urmums) and plenty of cables etc.

I am also wanting a "decent" video card. I dont do heavy heavy gaming as much as I used to, but something better than the GeForce 4 I had in my other system would be nice (FX5500-ish?)

I am definitly looking at overclocking this rig.

Please advise.

boht the xeon and opteron form great workstations.

here's some benches

use google - best friend for information

If you're going xeon, get noconas, if opteron, try to go for 244s or faster - that way you can use memory at ddr400 speeds instead of ddr333.

if you wanna go really tiny, there's the dual via mini itx :)

For overclocking, it's tough to oc dual cpu systems, opterons especially seem resistant to it.

Gains of a dual cpu system - multitasking, and and multithreaded apps. Dont expect any performance increases when running single threaded apps (games, old software, some complex algorithmic stuff that can't be broken etc.) by itself.

I am probably going to a single CPU system. I wasnt too sure I would get too much out of a dual proc system (other than bragging rights, and those arent much). Mostly becuase I do not know what software would really work well with this... (or how much control XP has over it)

I am bouncing between a 3.2ghz Intel with 1mb cache (forget which type atm)

There was an AMD 64 that seemed nice, but the retail was $330 or something. (I will have to look up specifics, I am at work and don't have them with me)

Everything. I have a laptop that can run all of my games, but I would like a desktop system. I will probably be doing everything from gaming, to programming, to typing papers, to internet.
