Sorry, I'm asking for opinions again.

Stick of 512 meg PC2700 ram made by PNY. $45 after rebate at Staples Presidents Day sale. Mixing with (2) 256 meg sticks of Micron PC2700 for a total of a gig on an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe. Was going to order Buffalo or something comparable from Newegg.

Anyone know anything about PNY? I've heard some good abouit video cards but thats it. Can't find CAS latency info on their site. Mine's currently 2.5. Don't want to default to 3. Thanks!

why bother with cas latency drops in performance if you're going to break the dual channel mode in the first place?

I wouldn't mix different RAM chips. Micron and xx chips in one system? No thanks.

According to ASUS, it will still be dual channel when all three slots are populated. DIMM-A1, DIMM-A2 and DIMM-B1. It can be a mix of 64, 128, 256, 512 or 1 gig in each socket.

Yes, my system still showed dual channel when I had all 3 slots filled with 256's.

Sorry I cant give you an opinion on the RAM. Actually, my opinion is spend the extra few bucks and get something with a good name. I use Mushkin and Crucial.

PNY is a 20 year old company that started out as a memory manufacturer who recently (last few years) moved into other arenas such as vid cards. Their memory is good, not top line like Crucial or Corsair, but definitely not generic.

as was said earlier........try to stick with same brand/maker of RAM.....

though major things agree.....type of RAM, latency, and size of RAM.......there is quite possibly differences between brands due to differences in manufacturing techniques and materials that can affect such things as heat dissipation, etc......so go with same maker.....

same thing goes on with medications......generic vs brand name for a particular drug......and generics are safe substitute for vast majority of drugs........there are some medications for which a switch from one brand to another is not safe.....both meds can have same medication in same amount in the dosage form......but due to differences in manufacturing as well as other chemicals present one drug may be absorbed at different rate than the same drug by a different maker...

if looking for lower price try searching to see which companies are buying other companies RAM then selling it under their own brand name........that would likely be a safe substitute
