I'm thinking of using my current laptop for business related activity, and I need a way to have always-on internet access for around two hours in rural areas. If it drops out, the job has to get restarted from scratch. My Asus K60I doesn't have a PCMCIA slot, just a bunch of USB connections. Who should I go with, and is there a USB card I can use?

The access point I'm looking for needs to be from a cell carrier, and the dongle needs to be USB, unless there's a secret compartment on the K60I that I'm unaware of. I have to assume that the people are living in a cabin in the woods six miles from the nearest telephone booth.

Do you have a carrier in mind? If you go to there site they can tell you the options they have. Another consideration If you have a smartphone would be to get a hotspot plan and use the wifi of your phone. Other than that there are USB options that the carriers in your area should be able to inform you of.

I don't know what carrier I'd choose. I guess whatever gives a lot of coverage, speed, and cheapness. The hotspot plan would probably not work out, as I said before, I'm going to be out in the middle of nowhere, so cell coverage will be the only option.

I doubt you have a choice. There probably is only one or none. Mobile broadband from whomever is out there if you are lucky.

Your Smart phone can act like a hotspot for WiFi in other words it is the hotspot via cellular phone. What area do you live in? do the carriers in your area have coverage where you want to use this?

I will be using it around the rural areas of Jefferson and the surrounding counties of Kentucky. I don't have a smart phone or a data plan, any recommendations? All of the major carriers are available (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Virgin Mobile, and Sprint; I'm on a Sprint calls-and-text-only).

I have been hearing that Verizon does a good job and has good signal quality so maybe Verizon. It looks as though you can get a USB modem with 4G LTE for a decent price though I'm not sure if you are going to do a contract or not.

If you get to the point where you want or need to connect more than one device to the internet on the go you can get a mobile hot spot until that time a USB modem should be just what you need.

Here's a fairly recent run-down of pre-paid plans from the different carriers. I made a much less complete list for the prepaid plans I'm interested in.

Sprint doesn't offer any unlimited mobile broadband plans. It has an unlimited data plan for data "on their network" for $100 monthly, so I don't know if that counts for laptops and common data sent outside of their apps. They have several plans without throttling that charge 5 cents per MB over the limit, however, which I find unreasonable. I probably won't exceed 1GB of data with the work I'm doing, but right now I want that option open so I don't get into trouble later. The closest thing they have is an $80 for 12GB plan. No 4G Louisville coverage, which as you'll see below, is common to almost all the carriers; it's not that important anyway, since even the best cell download speeds (unless you go with AT&T. Yeah......no.) barely reach a third of Windstream's never-steady 13mbps service. They have roaming everywhere, and 3G near cities and interstates. Coverage doesn't seem to be a big deal with any of the carriers, since they have at least some coverage in all of the areas I would be going anyway. The cheapest plan they have is 6GB for $50 monthly. It appears that they have no pay-go data plans.

T-mobile's highest data plan gives 10GB of data for $80, followed by throttling. No 4G in Louisville, apparently. They have roaming everywhere with a few gaps, and defaults to 2G outside of cities and interstates. Their cheapest pay-go plan for 30 days is $25 for 1.5GB. In addition to their best plan being a 5GB for $55, followed by throttling. I'm probably going to go with their $25/1.5GB plan out of all the other ones listed here.

Virgin has no 4G Louisville coverage; larger gaps than T-mobile, it's 3G or no coverage at all; they have smaller city and interstate coverage than T-mobile. Their cheapest pay-go plan for 30 days is $35 for 2GB (whatever plan they had going with Walmart is inactive). I don't think their $20/month for 0.5GB is available any more either.

MetroPCS has an unlimited data plan for $70, seemingly without throttling, but it is for phones only, so for my purposes it might as well be a 56Kbps dial-up plan. No Louisville 4G coverage.

Boost has a 2.5GB with throttling plan that starts at $50 and goes down to a minimum of $35. 4G isn't even an option, and neither are laptops.

Cricket has an 8GB-with-throttling plan for $65, without contract. No 4G option--I don't think they even have 3G. Their max speeds are 1.4mbps. In between Virgin and Sprint in gaps, has bigger limited-coverage bleed thanks to partnering; smaller city and interstate 3G coverage than Virgin. Their cheapest pay-go plan is $30 for 2GB a month, not including the equipment.

Even if AT&T hadn't disqualified themselves dozens of times over by different offenses over the years, they still wouldn't have an unlimited plan I would go with. Best they have for laptops is a $50 for 5GB contract plan, with $10 for every 1GB overage No throttling, apparently. Their pay-as-you-go plans are even worse, for $50 for 1GB of data. AT&T and Verizon are the only ones that offer 4G in Louisville, unfortunately. 4G LTE everywhere.

Verizon's options leave something to be desired: "Our pay as you go options are $50 for 5 GB of data, and $80 monthly for 10 GB of data. [...] You will be charged $10 for every GB you go over." For a contract plan, "You'd be looking at starting out at 4GB of data for $60 total, but you would receive more coverage and a faster network on the contract plan." joel96: What do you mean coverage differs? joel96: Does the pay-go plan not support 4G or something? Guy: Correct. joel96: What's the maximum amount of data I can get on a 2 year contract plan? Guy: 10 GB of data for $80. joel96: And by coverage, you don't mean that the network connection location access varies between the plans? Guy: Absolutely. In short, they sort of have 4G coverage in in Louisville if you want to get a contract. They have 4G LTE everywhere thanks to partnering, more gaps than AT&T, but fewer than T-mobile. The guy omitted mention that rather than hit the cap unexpectedly, you can pre-buy every 2GB more for $10 (half of the unexpected hit), so it is kind of unlimited. The guy also said I can buy the USB modem only without a phone and connect to the network. Also, the plan wasn't $80 for 10GB--it's $100, and you have to have a USB modem or Jetpack network access device, and it costs another $20 monthly to use them on the network. If you pay for five 2GB overages ahead of time at $10 each, that comes out to $170 monthly, which is only $10 less than the pre-paid version, but you get 4G access and don't have to pay the mandatory $180 for the Jetpack. There are going to be future Verizon plans coming out on August 23, 2012 that offer up to 20GB for $150 ($10 less than pre-buying the overage). Here's the contract plans, and here's the pay-go's (I think the one I'm looking for is the Jetpack plan, but there doesn't appear to be an option to activate a device bought from a third party, and it's not $80 like the guy said, it's $90 a month for 10GB,
and there is no option for automatic overage, which means not only is it throttled, but "after you go over your 10GB of data the device is shut off until you put more money on the account."). You can buy a second unit of 10GB per month for another $90. Purchase of the network access device is mandatory for the pre-paid plans, and it can't be bought as a recertified device from Verizon for a reduced price or used from eBay unless it was used as a pre-paid device by its previous owner. Their cheapest contract plan is $70 monthly for 1GB, and their cheapest pay-go plan is $60 for 3GB (plus at least $180 starting out). Here's the unabridged conversation with the second sales person:

You need to check the coverage maps on the various cellular providers websites to see which (if any) cover the area where you need the access. I'm an avid RVer and most RVers tend to go with Verizon because they generally have the best coverage over the US. However, Verizon doesn't cover everywhere so it would be in your best interest to check the coverage maps to make sure.

I have used tethered (cabled) phone, USB dongle, mobile hotspot and smartphone to provide internet access while traveling with my RV and I currently have a Droid Razr phone on the Verizon network which allows me to setup a wifi hotspot with 4G access. This setup is actually faster than my home ISP when connected to 4G but 4G isn't available everywhere.

I updated my above post with information about coverage. Unless I need 4G, coverage is a non-issue in my specific situation with any of the carriers listed. The setup you mention would be more expensive than any of the Verizon options listed above, and I don't need a smartphone. There's no reason why getting a dongle, a hotspot, a smartphone, and another phone (I think the terminology you're looking for is "wired" or "corded"--tethering refers to relaying data through another device with network access) would be cheaper than getting the already-expensive hotspot/dongle Jetpack. Verizon doesn't appear to have the cheapest plans, the widest coverage, or the highest data caps.

The setup I mentioned (Droid Razr smartphone) is what works for me, I didn't necessarily recommend it for you. I have an unlimited data plan and as I mentioned, with 4G, my downloads are faster using the phone than my home ISP. BTW, I used the correct terminology, tethering, and wasn't looking for anything else.

Regardless, the advice I gave to you about checking coverage where you need it is 100% valid.

This makes T-Mobile the only player in the entire mobile data plan to offer unlimited data without throttling or overage fees. EDIT: They throttle. See my next post.
This article explains the difference between Value and Classic plans: http://www.tmonews.com/2011/11/guest-po ... alue-plan/ (ignore what they say about Sprint's unlimited plan being the only game in town; I've shown at least two other companies that have workarounds to data caps, albeit costly ones).
Seems better to go with the $70 Value plan and then $20 for the data plan. Sprint's inbound plans are at least $20 more expensive. Sprint might be worth it if you need the 4G coverage, and if forum goers are spending this kind of money on mobile data, they're probably the kind of people to want the best service available anyway.

if you get a USB modem, youll want a couple more things.

1, a USB "Y" adapter that allows you to plug the modem into 2 USB ports. USB modems can draw 1 amp to hit distant towers. and notebook USB ports sometimes dont even give 0.5 amps per port (0.5 amps per port is the USB 2 spec). the cable may come with the modem, I think mine did (got it 5 years ago so I dont remember), but its needed if yours doesnt.

2, get a GOOD USB extension cable. you may need to hang the modem up somewhere away from your notebook/whatever. I have a 10 footer, very thick. I hang mine (USB720 verizon modem) up in a window.

USB modems should have a jack for an external antenna. worse case you may need to use one. and they are expensive.

yup, Im in the sticks. wireless broadband (EVDO) is the only game in town around these parts.

So I found out that T-mobile, while they do have unlimited data plans without throttling for phones, do not have such plans for laptops and other devices. The best monthly plan they have is 5GB for 4G of data, followed by 3G speeds thereafter for $50, with a $80 device, which is not taxed, so it would be $680 for a year. They have a contract plan (Overage-Free Ultra), which is the closest thing they have to unlimited data of 10GB of 4G followed by 3G speeds thereafter for $80 a month, is taxed (the highest state and local sales taxes nationwide I know of totals 9.75%), and includes the mobile hotspot for free. Since it's a contract, the early termination fee would be $200 for ending it at 365 days into the contract. The total for the Ultra plan with the highest-tax figure would be $1253.60 for a year.
