I'm trying to convince the wife to let me upgrade our computers to DX 11 cards.

After a decade of being an NVidia fan I'm thinking of going over to the darkside  with the ATI 5870.

We are currently running XFX 285 GTX Black Edition (overclocked model) and I'm thinking of going to the XFX Radeon 5870 (Standard model)

Is this a decent upgrade or is it still too soon?

Unless your noticing real performance drawbacks I would wait. If you look at a graphics hierarchy chart you would want to move up at least two spots I believe to notice a real difference. I think more than 10% increase. A 285 GTX and 5870 are only one spot difference so according to this unless you really want dx 11 there isnt a real gain.

Wait until November. The 6 series ATI cards will be out so they'll be a step up and if anything, the 5870 will be cheaper so you can take the plunge.

Do you have a link to one of these charts? I was looking for one but couldn't find any recent lists

This is the one I was looking at. Link. Toms hardware used to have a good one but they were pretty slow on updating it so I don't know if any fermi cards are on it yet. They were missing last time I looked but this one looks pretty good.
