I am liking the idea of a working drive with raid 1 backup drives. I could possibly afford SSD but I can wait until they drip in price. Just to be clear are you saying I should get a single internal drive for work and have two (external) backup drives in raid 1?

Internal or external is another choice to be made, I suppose. External increases the cost because you need an enclosure capable of RAID. Internal is easier, provided your case has at least 3 drive bays (most do).

I keep all my drives in my case. I have a drawer full of 8GB and 16GB USB keys .. more than enough space for the portability that I require.

I also have a pair of 32GB keys that have all of my backups. All my writing, code, data, etc.. One is plugged into my PC and I have automated backups every 12 hours. I swap them periodically and keep the second on my person.

I also buy a shitload of small USB keys (1GB - 4GB) to which I backup individual projects.

And yet .. I do absolutely no system-wide backups.

what is a USB key? is it a thumb drive?

ok, i need a boot/working drive (ssd if i can afford it) which can be smaller and two HDD's (whatever is on sale, brand does not matter, should be 750gb-1tb) to run in raid 1 for storage and instant back up. i do have 3-4 slots for hdd's. i should get a fan to blow on them too (i have a spot for that also)

i apologize for continuing to ask but i want to make sure i only spend money once and on the correct items. thank you very much for walking my through this.
