You think the 5970 would work well with my system?

Windows 7 - 64bit
Q9650
Asus Rampage (775 LGA)

and I use a 24inch monitor "1920 X 1200"

My main concern is compatibility. I have "upgraded" video cards before only to make my system very unstable. Maybe someone has some pointers?

Do you completely uninstall the previous drivers before putting the new video card in?
Also, a 5970 is overkill for that resolution. What do you have right now?

I have a 4870x2. Yes, in past systems I've always unistalled the prior graphic driver from within control panels. Maybe there is a better way of doing it?

Obviously there is nothing wrong with my card but I was reading about some of DirectX 11's capabilities and it made me want it.

ehh... there really isn't anything in DX11 to make it worth dropping $700 on a video card when your current card is plenty fast. Especially not with how many games support DX11- maybe 30 or so, and not all of them support many of the important features of DX11.
