I need to pick some minds. My nephew called and said his computer is going straight into the bios. It is not looking at any drives. I had him set the bios to default but no change. It is not looking at the floppy even. The motherboard is a MSI nforce 2 Athlon xp 2500+. Updating is out of the question do to job loss. Does it sound like a bad motherboard. He doesn't see any bad capacitors.

I have an Intel 945GNT motherboard that has a jumper on it. If it is in a certain position, it will load directly into the BIOS. Ask him if there are any jumpers that he can change. It might help.

For years is the key answer, electronics do eventually die and it sounds like that system has reached its life's end unfortunate but it happens.
It's that or the cmos battery has died so it would have to be reset after every boot.

Thanks GM I'll see what happens when I get a chance to look at it tomorrow. When I've seen batteries go in the past I've seen a posting error but I'll take one with me.

He brought the computer over to me today and it booted right up. I told him he may have a bad surge protector. I reseated the add on cards and it seems to be booting up fine. Thanks for the offers of help.
