Hey all. I'm trying to figure out how this happened.

See, I was encoding a DVD, and then I decided to go on the net. While on the net I started downloading some torrents, some TV shows, ya know.

Well, after I started downloading the TV shows I started to run too low on HD space, so I started unistalling a few things off my old C:.

Somewhere bettween the encoding, hashing, and unistalling FAH failed to write some XYZ coordinates on frame 57. Does it delete the WU? NO! Damnit the little fucker kept on going, all the way to completion, then it deleted it!

Cost me 242points.

1st. Why would excessive use of the hard drive lead to failed to write coordinates?

2nd. Why didn't FAH delete the WU instead of finishing the other 343 frames and then deleting it?

Pissed off,
Dan O.

Dont feel bad. I've lost a handfull of WU's the past couple of weeks.

I've seen everything from a core error to a "unknown comunication signal from the OS".... Huh? :?

Everything has settled down the past few days. Only thing that I noticed is that I went from getting those sweet 13xx's to nothing but 400 frame tinkers... Now I'm starting to get gromacs again, so I'm starting to see better output from my rigs. Seems like Intels run the Gromacs better then the Tinkers.

Well, actually AMDs fold Tinkers better than Intels. But the fact of the matter is that those 13xx's are large WUs and thus are worth bonus points.

If you were to start folding some of the older gromacs you'd be getting roughly the same ppd as a tinker.

Tinker? 13xx's? Gromacs? Im confused :)

I've lost a bunch of WU's since I started last week trying to get a username that was correct but now it should be stable.

Tinker; Gromacs; Double Gromacs,(dgromacs); and now Amber are the cores that F@H uses to actually do the calculations, different work units are sometimes referred to by the core that they use.

13xx refers to the project # of specific wu's. Since it's 13xx, all projects in the 1300 range are being referred to, as opposed to, a specific unit.

Go here to see a list of the current projects and the cores they use.

Clear as mud right? :)

Hey Mah,
I think you did very well at explaining it actually :)

And besides, unlike Gadget - it didn't require an entire chapter to do so

Cheers,

I've always seen better points per day when running Gromacs. I'm still waiting to see how an Amber core will run.

dont wait, they suck, only the 200+ pointers were good, point makers, my xeon, half, had a daily average over 300 points, i got 2 only at the same time on two different machines, frame time was 9:06 on both machines, half a 2.8 xeon, and a 3000+ amd.

2 only 40 pointers, slow as hell, brought the xeon down to 70 ppd.

2 only 60 pointers, faster than 40s, gave me 89 ppd on the xeon.
