Throwing down the gauntlet!!
I challenge everyone to get the top 20 to 200k+ by the end of Sept.

I'll join in the challenge myself though I will likely be taking off for the interim. It will kind of go against my other goal of paying off some debt by year's end, but if I work hard on some things, I can do both.

My plan, as I've thought of it just now:

On or before Aug. 8, stop folding for now (after I pass Gregg Shutt, roughly 54.4 mil points).
Save on electricity for a month and sell some other things. I'll fold only when I'm using my folding computer (very rarely).
By Sept. 15, Purchase a new card or build entire new machine (Currently, I've got a first gen i7 930).
By end of Sept. be cranking out 200k+ PPD on a new card/machine.

I'm hoping that new GPUs make a showing by then, but if not, then I'll have to 'settle' for an R9 290 or an R9 290X if the PPD/watt is better on that (and there isn't a huge price difference, < $50 or so maybe).

I see you at 2.6 years. You'll gain quickly during my break, but then it's game on

you are correct. I haven't even backed off yet. Still, even if I stopped today, you'd have a solid 180 days at slightly above your current average to catch up to me. I'll only be gone for a month or two, so unless you get something really serious, I feel pretty safe from you
Nice job kicking Maximum Butt though!

I've thought about more, but I would have to go way crazy to do more, due to really wanting a cool running PC... I can fit more GPUs, but I don't want the heat. It's not gonna happen for a while.

R3D, all I have to say is...

But, in all seriousness, I totally understand where you're coming from. Maybe a "Winter Folding Rig" and a "Summer Folding Rig" are in your future...? :) We can all hope.

My plan is coming together. I just passed Gregg Shutt as of the 9am update. When I get home, I'll be shutting things down for the most part for folding. I will still drop by in the forums at least as often as I have been lately. I enjoy folding, but the ongoing cost of $30-40 a month plus expensive and depreciating hardware doesn't make folding a cheap hobby to have. I'll have to do some evaluation and reflection, but the cause is still very worthy. I simply step back and see if folding is in line with other goals that I have for myself and my life.

I have had a great five year and three month run of folding. I will likely take up the banner again (at least for the end of September and possibly beyond), but only time will tell.

Cheers to you, Gero! You have certainly made an impact, regardless of your future plans.

BTW, this article appeared in my alumni magazine recently. Thought it was pretty cool, to say the least! Hopefully it'll grab a few new folks into the fold!

On a completely unrelated note...
I ordered an SSD for my box! Newegg had a nice deal for the 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro the other day and I ordered one. I didn't need nearly that much space, but for $170, I couldn't resist. It should be arriving today or tomorrow. I'm currently working on setting up my computer to be as power efficient as possible. I've also been looking at the Intel NUC and similar boxes as a replacement for my desktop. They look very nice for specs, but I'm hesitant due to price, lack of upgradability and fear of heat issues. If I truly do decide that folding is 'in the past' for me, then I will most likely be building or purchasing something like this in the future. Something to look into if efficiency is your game

the nuc and sounded cool, but i am worried of the same price/upgradeability/and heat as well as lack of performance, but the Gigabyte Brix Pro def has the performance potential, just has the same first 3 issues. A mini itx build seems the way to go for price, heat, and upgrades (or hand-me-downs from the main rig)

Yeah, that looks like a good way to possibly go. I would like to retain the ability to fold on a GPU in the future if I were to build a new system. The only concern that I still have with this is cost. I'm cheap and the NUC fits the bill at $300-$400 equipped. I haven't recently looked into cost for a mini-ITX build, but last time that I did, it wasn't cheap to build a decent system.

I lied. not yet. I'm working on moving partitions around and all that fun stuff! Unfortunately I'm heading out of town for the majority of this coming week and will have to wait until Thursday or Friday until I can really work on getting things set up correctly.

I tried to install fresh, but couldn't activate Windows due to me having an upgrade copy. I am moving my files to a single HDD, wiping my backup, copying my HDD to my backup, deleting my copied partitions, then copying the OS partition to the new SSD. Fun stuff in store! I'm on step one right now; copying my files to a single HDD :x
