Hey, thanks man! Glad to help. I'm planning some upgrades before the year is out as well. I want those Russians.

Really, more upgrades? I'm never gonna catch this guy, just zoomed right past and never looked back. White Russians, or black (or Red)? Actually, I saw overclockers in our sights earlier today (29.4 years out). I think we can catch TSC, which will be good, considering we'll have dropped a spot or three by the time we do.

More new hardware for team 11108?! YAY!

What do you have in mind?

(I wrote a HUGE reply to this, but then it turned into something deserving of its own thread, so check out the "you guys rock" thread)

Yeah, I'm upgrading my main desktop case to one with a lockable door cause my kids love pressing the buttons on it, plus it needs a better video card so I'm gonna use the occasion to do some other refreshes as well. Also, I have that Ncase mini-itx case coming so I've been toying with ideas on how to get max ppd out of that. I'd actually love input on how you would get max ppd out of a mini-itx motherboard, regardless of cost(not that cost won't play a roll, I just like to know best case then work back from there).

A bit more on my thinking with the mini-ITX build. It basically has to be an Intel LGA1150 part, so I'm curious if I'd get more points from a Core i7-4790K or the Xeon E3-1271 v3, which is about the same price. Not sure what to do there. Is there anything about the Xeon parts that helps with folding?

Okay, that helps narrow it down a bit. Between those two procs, go with the i7. http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/497/Intel_Core_i7_i7-4790K_vs_Intel_Xeon_E3-1271_v3.html. Probably be a couple days before I have time to sit down and do a build. In the meantime, there's no special advantage I know of for Xeons in Folding.

Just got notification that my 4790K has shipped (but no package tracking info...), so once I get it into my new rig, I'll post some deets on the WU numbers to give an idea of what of what you might expect.

Is the295X a possibility in the Ncase?

This is the most powerful SFX PSUthat I could find, and Toms Hardware said that the most that a 2X 8pin port would draw would be 375 Watt.

But, I'm wondering how much the whole system would pull, between the CPU, MB and GPU...?

Could be mighty interesting, wdfogg....!

BTW, have you found anything on the interwebs about folks using the 295X in the earlier Ncase models?

From what I can tell LW, the 295X2 won't fit because the tubes from the CLC come out the top and would need to bend pretty sharply to get to where you've have to mount the rad. I wish though. Although, if I spent $1500 on a video card it would definitely go in my gaming rig.

The other big thing I have to consider is power, like you point out. A lot of SFF builders seem to use the Silverstone SFX 450w PSU. They're working on a 600w unit too, but no release date has been set from what I can tell. Most seem to report you can run a high end CPU and GPU on it fine, just can't OC.

Okay, umm, this is what I came up with. There's a Titan Black in it, so that's half the cost, obviously that could be jiggered with, as the storage configuration (120GB SSD, 2TB HDD), or whatever else. I went with a non-K CPU, mainly for the lower TDP of the 4790S. Again, it's just a sketch. In real life you'd probably want like a 780/770 and the 4790K. The main thing is, I think it would all fit, and probably run.

Thanks for that, appreciate all the input. I have some thinking to do over the coming months. One question since you mention the Titan Black, does F@H use double precision? That's the Titan series's strong suit IIRC.

No, F@H is single precision. I'm sure I had some reason for picking a Titan, I think. I'll check it out some more. I didn't think you'd actually consider getting one.

Edit: No, you know what, go 780 Ti. Oh, also, I think I might have one too many 120mm fans in that build.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'm partial to AMD myself but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on a great Folding solution. I'll probably go with something like a R9 290, now that they're back down at MSRP, which is right at that 780 level I believe. Appreciate you putting that rig together on PC Part Picker but I'm probably gonna keep it basic at first to get it Folding for minimal cost. I have an extra Samsung 830 SSD lying around, a couple case fans, and a 4GB stick of RAM I can reuse. I think this is all I'd need.

Aw, hell, I didn't really expect you to take that build whole-cloth. Actually had you pegged for an AMD man, I just like NVIDIA right now for heat and power considerations. R3D is using a 290X now and tearing it up.

Just make sure you get one with a good cooler! The 290 series has great silicon, but needs to stay cool.

People complain about the 290x running 95c, but mine holds 69-70c folding.

Oh, hey, wdfogg, will the radiator from the H110i fit? I'm not saying it won't, I don't know, but the specs on the case said a 240mm rad would have to be slim.

R3D, really good temps on your GPU. What model did you get? BTW, also grossly unfair. I was so close....

I've posted in 2 other threads just a min ago, but I'll reply here too.

XFX and their DD cooler.

I'm actually worried about my low temps... may be throttling. (check other thread...)

The H100 will fit but the H110 won't. I've seen pics of several builds with the H100i.
