Now we just need to figure out how we can add another million PPD to our team.

Simple really; get two guys to add decent 4P systems. Anyone have 3 grand sitting around to do this?

I'd be more than happy to put up my rig(s) to get one started (would be far from $3k for my rigs, but enough to get a board and one or two procs running).

I see that 6128's are down to $100 per cpu... now we just need to find cheap prices on mobo's and I'd be set. Might build a 2P setup first; I have a decent paying photo gig next week so many I can grab something next month.

I have 16 cores crunching...not the points i thought id be getting tho. Average 14k. Maybe when i get the 6 core upgrade chips ill notice some significant gains.

we told yah... should gotten the 6128's man... and now they are hitting the $100 each mark on ebay. Only if their mobo's weren't so god damn expensive! Even their 2P boards are crazy high. I mean some 2P xeon boards start around 250, why does opteron's gotta start at 430? They are suppose to be better at price/performance as a platform. right?

When i started this, i wanted to end up with the 16 core box and the 24 core box. All in the name of testing. Just need to get the chips ordered and we will have the 24 box as well. I have everything else.

grab a buncha the memory that I posted on the help building thread and you're set for that. I'd go 4P, a bit more for the mobo and you get to add 2 more CPUs later (or now).

We have plans...

yeah, you can get the same thing with 'worse' CPU placement for around $620. The one pictured is around $720, cheapest that I've seen.

there is a seller on feeBay selling server setups for around $1100. Just need to add ram and CPUs. I'm really thinking about going with that because it comes with everything needed, sans CPU and RAM. Great PSUs, fine fans, rackmount case, and everything else, ready to go. Less mucking around that I have to do building things. I'd likely replace the fans that it comes with (I guess they make TONS of noise).

Aah, spending money that I far from have :?

yeah, true, the ebay barebones listing you posted up in other threads are great deals considering you get 2u server rack that costs 300 bucks plus a dual 1400w psu and mobo. Really hard to justify building one from part by part at that point.

Unfortunately, bad news. The main rig is down (and has been for the past several days). I got new memory and was testing it out. I decided that a BIOS upgrade was in order (being 2-4 revisions behind isn't acceptable). I did try updating the BIOS a few weeks ago via the Windows utility, but that was a major catastrophe. This time I decided to use the utility built into the BIOS (Q-flash, as this is a gigabyte board). Long story short, the same thing happened as last time. After flashing, no booting of any sort. I tried what worked last time (connecting pins to force the backup BIOS to overwrite the main bios), but that didn't work (thus far). After working on trying that for a while, I gave up and went to bed. I had vacation to get to in the morning. I'm back from vacation and will likely have a bit of time to work on things tomorrow night (Thursday night), but for now, no main rig running for G (down around 35k PPD)

If you guys see any good deals like this, let me know, I"m buying a server rack for my current 2U servers, and would like to add another server.

If you need the link, I can get it to you. I haven't seen any other deals close to this deal, but I haven't looked too hard. Beats putting it together yourself (though, that's half the fun, but a majority of the frustration too). You can just look it up on eBay pretty easy.
