Original post below, edited to put details at top:

So far I have the Tyan box from ebay for $635
4x Opteron 8376 $177
16x 1gig RAM $79

Box came with HS/FAN and a 320gig HDD. I plugged in CPUs and let er rip. Seller also sent a COA for Server 2008
Total for 16 core: $891
320w at 100% load
14k ppd

I have these extra parts for a second build, which will end up being the 16 core box when i order the 6 core CPU for the Tyan box above.
TYAN S4985G3NR Thunder n4250QE $100 PURCHASED
PSU $90
Fans $60
Need brackets for CPU FAN $80
Need 6 core Opty $120 each

Ill end up with 40 cores chomping for $1601. Going to sell the 16 core parts and keep the 24 when its all done and running.

ORIGINAL POST:

Someone else can spend the cash on the G34 box, i went a slightly cheaper route to get started.
Ive researched two different setups, with lots of information from other forum members. I wanted to see how the $500 16 core box did compared to the 24 core box. I guess I volunteered myself for testing. Also, should we move this to the private forum? Should we be sharing our wealth of information with the enemy?

First: $491

RAM $64 8x 1gig sticks

Second: $1125

4x 8439 6 core 2.8's
8gig RAM
250gig HDD
Server 2008 R2 1 user

Seller will assemble everything and test before shipping to me. All i have to do is put the Server CD in and get it loaded. Should be folding within 2 hours of receiving : ) I will update the title when I have one up and running and will use this thread to post my PPD...watts...all the info i can. More then likely the 16 core box will get listed for sale once its loaded and operational. I just wanted it for comparison.

EDIT**This is why i fold : )

Awesome stuff Rick! :D I am really looking forward to seeing your results. Are your going to fold SMP or bigadv? If you do bigadv, would you do us a favor and also fold at SMP to give us a comparison between the two?

looks like fun. Should get a decent number of points. Hopefully they'll be worth it.

Keeping things public should be fine. Other forums seem to keep their discussions public, so we might as well too. if anyone wants to chime in or fish for info here, more power to them. In the end, more science gets done for the project, regardless who does it.

sweet, post up pics when you get it built.

I actually had a good talk with a friend and he basically convinced me when I get my job to put the max in my 401k and IRA roth instead. I donno when I can follow suit with my 4p setup. Damn me being responsible.

For the trees right? oh oh! the molecular structure of cotton and nylon? lol

On a serious note, if you can get a kill-a-watt reader, would like to see what your wattage from the wall for a system like yours.

Have the meter, well test both systems, running both SMP and big for 24 hours

That is a better idea. Put all that you can into a roth [IRA or 401(k)]. Getting free money from your employer match is great. Also, if you can get more money in there you can retire earlier. Get a million or two in there, hit the bricks and retire around 50 or so. If you can swing it, put the max into your retirement account (It's $17,500 or $18k this year). compounding interest is a great thing. I hope to have at least a mil in my account when I retire in 34.5 years :( Hopefully things go a bit better for my retirement acct. in the future.

Yeah... but I'm asian... and I actually like to work... lol

I mean I liked to work so much, I had 6 jobs at one time in college. Never slept. Even now, I barely sleep; and I haven't had a real job in 18 months. Although, I'm really good as a handyman and a mechanic for some side income to pay the bills.

As for the sys admin job, its just an entry level position; more like an internship since I haven't done commercial level IT stuff in 10 years. I just need to make sure I start doing certifications again and learn commercial level equipment again. My friend (who basically is getting me the job) said its a laid back company, but they are doing rapid IT expansion so I'll be joining the team at the perfect time as they plan to replace all their servers and infrastructure all over the US. And this is a billion dollar company with only 4-6 real IT sys admin guys (not including help desk).

Could easily get promoted to a junior level sys admin after a year which would basically be double the entry level pay, and finally allow me to have a large disposable income, but still put the max into my 401k and IRA. What else should I look into? I'm so new finances besides simple CD and MM accounts. Always spent the money as fast as it came in when I had my photo business for 4 years (so yeah, basically paid myself no salary).

So THATS how you make a 8p set up. I was trying to figure that out. Thanks Ted.

The best part about this build is where the money came to fund it.

When the boss says "make this pile of hardware disappear, i dont want to deal with"....okie dokie!

Huge lot of upgraded hardware, nothing too fancy. There as some phone equipment in there that made the big bucks so far. PBXgateways and IP Extenders.
So far i have netted $800 from stuff they were going to throw away...and thats just in the last week. I still have a lot of stuff to go through, lots of old junk for sure.

Found a server with a 5cal Server 03 sticker on it. License should be worth something i would think....
Bunch of gutted PCs with XP Pro stickers...

For me to play with here at home. Hoping it will replace 3 PCs. Desktop, media server and pbx server. Prolly keep the 08 on there and use it as my daily driver.

yeah, paypal has been exceedingly annoying this year. My main credit card expired so I had to put a 2nd one there and it took a week to get the approval to get funds from it... I mean I was buying some games on steam that week and was very frustrating not being able to use my paypal account.
