HIV is manageable with proper medication. For someone facing cancer, the long-term prognosis may be better with HIV. I guess it's picking the lesser of the two evils. Interesting means of battling cancer, but not what I would really call a cure.

This type of research has been going on for a couple decades. The principle sound solid though, weaken only the targeted structures and ignore the healthy. The studies I am aware of have made drug advances because they have been able to study how these cells get targeted or weakened through the engineering.
