What part of the world do you fold in?

I just recently moved to Kansas City, MO (northern Kansas City). I moved up here because I’m starting a new position with Cerner Corporation. I’m formerly from Rolla, MO and went to Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. I graduated in May 2011 with a BS in Information Technology Service Management. If you aren’t sure what this major is, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVq2QK_P_Eo . I was part of the class that was being filmed. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it in to the video. The student that was interviewed was sitting right next to me though!

I am a big fan of multimedia and such. Unfortunately, I don’t have the greatest setup right now because I’m fresh out of college.

I do have a very large collection of remotes though!

And even a few Woot monkeys :P

Is any of your folding done at your business location or your home and do any friends or relatives add to your production.

All my folding is done on my personal machines. The main production is produced from my computer. However, I also run the SMP client on my parent’s machine. I use Team Viewer to monitor the production of the machine. I would post a screenshot, but it’s a very boring graphically.

Image

My machine:
Intel Core i7 860 at 2.8GHz
Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 (LGA1156)
4GB Super Talent DDR3 1600
XFX Radeon HD 5770 (not overclocked)
Corsair CMPSU-750TX
Cooler Master Storm Scout
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Acer 23” monitor, 1920x1080
Logitech X-540 speakers
ATI 650 PCIe Combo TV Tuner (which is not plugged in to anything)
Lite-ON 24x DVD Burner

I don’t have a picture of my parent’s machine unfortunately.

Parent’s machine:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 at 2.4GHz
GA-G41M-ES2H LGA 775 motherboard
2GB DDR2 800 RAM (don’t remember brand)
eVGA 9800GT (doesn’t fold because of overheating problems)
Antec 350w Smartpower 2.0 power supply (this thing is from 2006)
Antec 1650B case (also from 2006)
Logisys media card reader
Acer 17” monitor (not widescreen)
Windows 7 Professional 32 bit
ATI 650 PCI tuner
Generic DVD burner

What's is your normal day like maintaining all your production?

Surprisingly, I don’t have to do that much maintenance. I check my folding stats every few days to ensure the WU’s are crediting properly. I also remote in to my parent’s machine every so often to ensure the client is still running. I use the FAH GPU tracker program on all the computers. This program makes it really simple to monitor the machines.

Do you have any procedure you use to beat the heat?

Fans! Lots and lots of fans. Other than that, I just live with the heat. Not much you can do to prevent it.

Do you have to fold less when the heat is at it's worse?

I fold as much as I can whenever I can. Hot or cold I fold regardless. I have had to take certain things down because they simply don’t produce enough to be folding, mostly older Core 2 Duo’s (E4300’s).

Image

I am going to upgrade the machines at some point in the future. Probably when I’m making more money.

Do you have any tips or warnings to pass along to the team that you learned the hard way?

If you have a problem with your computer, always start with the easiest possible solution first. And if you suspect a software problem, always troubleshoot the software problems first!

Oh and Folding is addictive. Most people here already know and constantly think about upgrades. But for the new people, be careful, you will end up spending a lot of time on Newegg, Amazon, and other computer retailer websites.

Do you visit the forum often and do you post?

I do visit the forum quite often and normally post several times a day. Lately I haven’t had that much time to post since I’m just starting a new job right now. But I do try to check in occasionally.

The best thing I like about this forum is the helpfulness of all the members.

Thanks for a great HowLight
Hackman has been around here forever

He was a high school student when he did his SpotLight years ago

All through high school and college he has been industrious
Running things, jobs at school, jobs at websites.
He didn't brag about his grades but I'm sure they were good.

He will continue this life long trait and it will serve him well in his IT career.

He has always loved to conquer malware and virus problems, doing write-ups for MaximumPC so everyone benefited.

So now you are up to date on hackman2007's progress

nice.

maybe I'll do a spotlight one day.

meanwhile, I tried to reply to the test thread in the clubhouse and my post still had to be submitted to a mod. did my account get hacked or something?

Very cool, Hack. From the video, it seems you were in a great degree program. Congrats on the new job!

@Tedster, I had the same thing. It was submitted for mod this morning and is posted now. Same on Quakindude's thread.

Thanks everyone. It feels good to not have to pay someone else for a change  .

@Full_Taoer, Tedster: I'm pretty sure there are some permission issues on that folder. I was having trouble with it as well.
