Lets meet Spacegy4...............

He can't wait to see your reaction (He told me so).

Where do you call home these days?

I currently live at school at the Rochester Institute of Technology. I am currently studying Computer Engineering Technology. My only brother is currently in college at the Berkley College of music in Boston. He is a drummer. I have 2 cats at home in upstate New York. One is sprightly and the other is fat and slow. The white cat with the black tail is named Lightning. The best way to describe him is bipolar. He just goes crazy romping around and chases everything and the next moment he just lays there and looks up saying *pet me*. Or if you notice him laying and try to pet him he might suddenly get up and take off at warp cat speed. The other cat is named Misty. She is rather territorial and tries to chase Lightning but fails to catch him. This is mainly due to her being fat.

What got you started folding?

I noticed the folding blurb it in the magazine. It seemed like an interesting thing to do so I started it on my main machine which at the time was a Pentium 4 HT. As some people may remember the GPU1 period were my hay-days. I think I may have been one of the only people who was using gpu at the time and had 3-4 gpu1 machines going. (an x1900gt,x1950pro (AGP), and x1900xtx) I actually caught up and overtook a couple people who had lone SMP machines.

Where are you employed?

I am currently studying Computer Engineering Technology at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Only a couple years ago did I discover that Grim_Tuesday enrolled as a freshman at the same high school I had attended! It was a pleasant surprise when I was browsing the MPC forums and Grim asked me who I was and I said I was spacegy4. It was a pleasant surprise when he said he was Grim_Tuesday!

What other hobbies or interests do you pursue when not folding?

I am heavily involved in the First Robotics Competition team at my high school. To put it simply the team of about 35 students and 5-7 mentors has to design a complex robot that plays a specified game within a 6 week period. I met Grim_Tuesday through this club.
This is a rendering I made of the CAD design 2 years agos robot

Another thing that I like to do is reenact Civil War battles.

I am in a group that represents the 4th New York Independent Light Artillery. The gun the group uses is a reproduction of a 12 pounder gun howitzer. We fire off 8 oz (half pound) of black powder in each round we shoot off. We are of course shooting off giant blanks.

For reenacting I've borrowed an Enfield, Springfield, Colt revolving Carbine and Henry Repeating Rifle when I've done infantry.

In that pic I'm 2nd from the right firing a Henry Repeating Rifle

At RIT I enjoy participating in a campus wide game of Humans vs Zombies. For those who don't know what HvZ is it is a week long game of modified tag. It takes place outside.

There is only a few zombies to start. Once a human is tagged her or she becomes a zombie. A human can stun a zombie for 7.5 minutes by shooting them with a Nerf blaster or with a clean sock. At the start there were 3 zombies and 700 humans. Each night the humans go on missions to try to make extraction day go more smoothly. By the end there were only about 18 humans left and none of them made it to the safety of extraction. This wasn't unusual because extraction is designed to be near impossible to reach.

The most recent game also resulted in a flawless victory for the zombies. Not a single human survived the extraction.

How did you learn about computers?

I learned most of my basic computer tech knowledge from reading MaximumPC, various other computer magazines, and of course, tinkering with computers. At first I didn't really have a total understanding of what I was doing and broke some machines while trying to tweak them, but now I can easily build machines and frequently give advice to friends who want to learn more or try building a computer.

What hardware are you currently running?

Here is a link to the my log I made while building the custom case: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=105765

Picture on its side so you can see hardware

I finally came up with a name for the mod. Project Mill Spec. A play on military specification and computer aided milling and laser cutting that I used throughout the project.

Manufacturer:
Custom built
Processor:
Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20GHz (2 CPUs), ~3.0GHz (OC) Cooled by corsair H50

Hard Drive:
500 GB x2 RAID-0
Video Card:
Saphire ATI Radeon HD 5970 mini DP OC
Monitor:
Apple Cinema 20" + Dell 20.1" 6"+ MIMO USB monitor built into case

Sound Card:
Creative X-Fi Titanium (PCI-E)
Speakers/Headphones:
Steel Series 5H V2
Keyboard:

Mouse Surface:
Func industries mouse mat
Operating System:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Motherboard:
MSI P7N Platinum Nvidia 750i sli
Computer Case:
Custom built camouflage Cube case

Do you build your own computers today?

Always, and forever.

Do you overclock any machines?

yes The pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2ghz is overclocked to 2.9 ghz
HD5970 overclocked to 850mhz core from 735mhz core

What are the main things you use your computers for today?

I play games, do productivity work such as coding and web page building, and of course most importantly I fold for team MaxPC on most of my machines.

What do you like most about Folding and the MaximumPC forum?

My favorite thing about being on the MaxPC team is the TEAM aspect. I like knowing that I'm not alone out there. It was absolutely amazing being able to get advice from others about how to configure the SMP client back when you had to jump through 3 hoops and do a barrel roll to configure it properly. I decided to return the favor by making my own tutorial for ATI gpu V7. When I noticed the gauntlet section and that people liked to be competitive I decided to be involved there. It is great fun to try to make the best use of my machines and add more to compete in those gauntlets.

I'd like to especially thank a specific person for helping me in my earlier starting folding efforts, and that would have to be doc, Michael McCord MD. After he noticed my strong interest in folding on the early x19xx gpus he asked me if he could send me enough parts so that I could configure another gpu rig. I was dumbfounded, surprised, happy.. all at once. No one had ever just volunteered to send me hardware before. That machine was crunching WUs up until the death of GPU1 and I want to show that I am eternally grateful for his support.

I also really enjoyed the contests and drawings. For those who remember I was a 2 times in a row winner of hardware in the drawings way way back. It was a great incentive to recruit new members to the team as well as add and improve my current hardware.

What are your future folding plans?

I'm on my way to my first million. I'm very excited for it and I'm going to speed up my reaching that goal as much as possible

When I bought my HD5970 I had hoped it would become a folding beast with GPU3 but it was delayed. Now that there is finally some rough open CL support I've got my 5970 crunching on some WUs. I also just recently produced a tutorial geared to people who want to get the most out of their ATI HD5xxx/HD6xxx and later GPUs. Check it out here:

Spacegy4 thanks for a great SpotLight
It could well be the last as we move to Howlights.

You provided lots of great pictures and spirit for the final SpotLight

Reminder - HowLights Don't require pictures of a person or pets.
They don't require info about other hobbies
Just high level part of the world you live in (I'll supply those pictures)
But mostly how you do what you do to make your production happen.

It doesn't matter if you're producing 500 -1000 ppd or much more.
What you do will inspire others to try and emulate your success.
You leverage your efforts by inspiring others.
With that in mind, I would rather work with some volunteers.
So volunteer here or send me a private message.
Lets get some new points flowing for the team by shedding Light on How you do it .

How about someone new that doesn't know me well
I want to meet new folders in the HowLights
I'm sure everyone else would also

You just like this one because he adores cats.

From that you assume he's good people and can do no wrong.

Admit it.

well there is a lot of truth in that comment, most cat people are good people, or is it most good people have cats. at present we have three in the house, and 3 Feral cats under the house that we are trying to make friends with. it could be a long time before we see any real success. I know "you" are a cat person now 8)

I agree, very nice article and thank you for sharing it with us.

In that picture of someone in the Minecraft costume, it took me a moment to figure out that the top of the tool was attached to the handle he was holding instead of the front of the costume. I thought, "OMG, is that? No! Wait, is it?"

That HvZ sure sounds like a ton of fun! My wife and I play Left4Dead all the time and would get a kick out of a live game like that.

Great job Spacegy4 and thank you for the kind words. Since I am the father of an artillery officer, he will be glad to know of your interests in the big things that go BOOM. If you're ever in the Ft. Sill, OK neighborhood, you could look him up and he could show you the newer models!

How do you like those stampedes? I'm thinking of getting one.

(@G: FYI: the recon (top one in your picture) is not that good.

I wouldn't know

I just wanted the combination of nerf and Civil War in the same picture to reflect our Spacegy4's
varied interests
