Okay, it's a loaded question to which I already know the answer... but if any of you were pondering that question and folding on a GPU, here's the cause. GPU core version 2.25 was just released. They are working on Kepler optimizations & so it seems that Fermi cards are suffering, this should only be a temporary situation as they work the bugs out & release even newer cores in the near future.

Performance under 2.25 for me personally is horrific. I'm talking up to 2 minutes per frame & 5,000 ppd worse than the same work units under core version 2.22. Stanford / Pande Group already know about the performance drop & were apparently expecting it. All we can do is either stop folding on the GPU & watch our average ppd drop even more, or wait for the next core update to come out.

Appreaciate your taking the time to keep us updated on your thoughts of the differing "core versions" and their ramifications. Frankly, I'm more of a mechanic than a programming geek, etc. Bottom line "from your interpretations" we're in for at least a small dry spell in PPD and a certain amount of frustration in the use of Fermi gpus in f@h". Like I've already said though "it's good to know, with some certainty", WTF is going on, when my mechanicing hardly, if at all, succeeds to makes a dent in my personal, PPD.


Tell you what... if you and others are willing to help keep us in the know academically, in what's taking place, I'm willing to keep my machines tuned accordingly and hopefully in the right direction, for the good of the Team and of course, the Science, which keeps us in a common search for anything to stimulate Scientests' and Doctors' minds toward piecing together cures for us, our children and grandchildren.

Appreaciate the update.

one thing that can be done is to revert back to the 2.22 core. That will help until the newer version gets downloaded again. A huge help is to fold beta units with a quick return bonus (QRB) (from all the buzz on the other forums). I've done the changes, but have had no joy yet. Maybe I didn't do something correctly. If you end up getting a unit, the points seem to be 3-4x 'normal'.

That would require some 'not quite kosher' hijinks. When 2.25 is downloaded, it replaces 2.22 & no backup of 2.22 is made, so the only way to get back to 2.22 is to copy it from a PC that has core version 2.22, but hasn't been running GPU units. Then you would have to do a few things that are against Stanford's terms of use...

Stanford is the big looser here with production reduced by as much as 40% on certain cards, that means that every day 2.25 is live, they are getting fewer completed GPU work units turned in. Fewer work units means slower progress on the science side of things.

from what I saw on the [H] thread, they have updated v7 to use seperate folders for the 2.22 & 2.25. I think that there is a post on the [H] thread about it.

Bottom line is: that is a form of cheating, & though not strictly worded as being against the terms of use, they are skirting past the bounds of Stanford's wishes, kind of like folding "BigAdv" work units on 12-core systems through Virtual Machines.

If I hear correctly, current GPU work units will require a minimum core version of 2.25 in order to fold in the very near future... This means that anyone trying to work around it will simply not be able to fold.

I wouldn't really see it as cheating. The 2.22 version works better with Fermi cards and the 2.25 version doesn't work as well with Fermi, but seems to work better with Kepler. Yes, the newer WUs will force download the newer version, but I wouldn't try to stop that from happening. I'd wager that if Stanford wanted everyone to only be able to use the 2.25 core, they could likely do that. A 30-40% hit on PPD sucks any way you slice it.

Technically, overclocking a CPU or GPU is 'cheating' (by one entity or another). The point is that people still do it and it is generally accepted as a fine thing to do. I'm not here to argue about the ethics of swapping out one version for another of a core, I'm just letting people know that the possibility is out there for better performance. I haven't even done it myself.

On another point, I can't wait until the 'equal points for equal work' on the GPUs comes into full effect. From what I have seen, this is why the whole 3-5x points thing came up. I've got 3 GPUs waiting for the bump :)

The only entity that matters is Stanford and they say overclocking is fine. It's like drag racing... if the governing body of a given race says Nos is fine to use, then it's not cheating if you use it, but if they say it's against the rules, and you use it anyway, you can be thrown out of the competition without compensation, & potentially banned from future competitions.

The difference between overclocking & what [H] does & you're suggesting, is that Stanford says overclocking is fine, but has asked that we not tamper with the client or the cores. Replacing a newer core with an older core is a form of tampering.

If all you care about is the points, then go ahead & swap out those cores.

Correct. I think they are already 'reigning in' the points. I have gotten a few of the units now and the points don't seem to be quite as high as what I've seen reported (though they are pretty nice :twisted: )

In this case, the units that need the newer version of the core do a check and download the new version if it isn't present. Also, more science is able to be done with the older core (better TPF). While I don't do it, swapping could be seen as beneficial in that way (as well as in PPD). If Stanford explicitly said not to do it, I'd agree with them on that, but I haven't seen that they have.

I was just bringing it to the attention of the readers that you could get a good bump by adding the beta flag and also a little more bump by swapping.

From what I've read and see by dropping PPD, the newer core version performs ~30-40%+ worse when compared to the older version. Swapping has no ill effects on the amount of science done, and arguably has positive effects via quicker turn-around for WUs (and thus higher PPD).

If Stanford were really concerned they would have done better testing on the core version as to not hurt turn-around time so greatly on WUs already in the wild.

I seem to have left the 5187 PPD wus behind. I folded those for about a week before adding the beta flag. I downloaded a 8*** wu last night, worth over 100,000 PPD. On average, my PPD doubled! http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ ... =&u=137527

You're welcome! We're a month behind on the news, but I've seen a handful of the 8057s and I'm happy too! Over the past 24 hours, I'm around 81k PPD. Beats the heck out of 45-50k PPD :twisted:
