Alright ive been wondering this for a while, here are my specs:


CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 Processor (Deneb)

RAM: 8GB DDR3-2000 OCZ Platinum

HDDs: (1) 60GB OCZ Agility 2 SSD, (2) 250GB WD Caviar's, (1) Seagate FreeAgent 1.5TB

GPU: BFG GTX 260 OC2 (65nm)

Motherboard: ASUS M4N98TD EVO

DVD Drive: Lite-On SH16A7S

Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster XL2370

Computer Case: Silverstone Fortress FT02B

Sound Card: Creative Fatality Soundblaster X-Fi

Speakers: Logitech Z-10 Speaker System

Keyboard: Logitech G19

Mouse: Logitech G5

the bfg oc 260 gtx is a 55nm if memory serves me
the 65 nm were the old style
I have 2 of them in my pc and really dont feel like looking for the boxes rite now but pretty sure they are not the 65 nm fab

if I had to put a price on your pc

couple of things to keep in mind

aging quad core cpu
aging gpu(while still a good one, its far from the top of the line now)
60 gb ssd are under 100 bucks now
2 tb total storage in 3 drives, 2tb drive today 99 dollars in ONE drive
8gb of ddr3 is under 100 dollars today, ram is falling like a sky diver with no chute on
no mention of the OS with 8gb I assume its a 64bit os?


I would "ball park" this one at around 500 bucks today. When you built it was probably closer to 1,400 dollars I Know but still with the details you have an have not given thats the best I can estimate


I didnt include the mouse/keyboard speakers in the estimate mostly due to the fact that peripherals are such a spotty market you can never tell what they cost day to day and used ones are even harder to give a price on. They become flea market table fodder quickly no matter how nice you keep them, used items that were 50 dollars new are often 5 dollars used.
and a add in sound card is redundant for most motherboards, mine has 7.1 surround sound onboard.

no no i know what you mean. the 2 western digital hard drives i have are about 4 years old haha and the ssd i just bought for about $125. the video card IS 65 nm because i remember buying it when every video card out at the time was that and then a few weeks later it was brought down to 55nm. it even says 65 in gpu-z. the cpu is about a year old i understand that but it can still go for around $130-150 used. and 8GB of OCZ DDR3-2000 RAM?? for under 100?? where? this is 2, 4GB packages put together and i bought one for $100 and the other for $89...The board is only 5 months old and i bought it for $140 newegg. it still goes for that i believe. The case is practically brand new...it fetches for $250...new. used...about $200 or somewhere around there. Nothing i have in here is cheap. The creative sound card i got a good deal on cause it was on sale for christmas for $69 its originally $150..The G19 has been out only for a few months and i got it for $110. I also forgot to mention that i have a noctua-DH14 cpu cooler thats easily worth $90. so please, dont say that my computer is worth around $500

4 2GB DDR3 2000 DIMMs would run about $160 new on newegg today, and are not worth the same used. GTX 260's seem to be going for about $50-100 on ebay. Processors's $50-100 on ebay. $500 is possibly a little low if you parted it out, but probably not far off.

A few things:
1. You may be able to get more if you sell to people familiar with computers. Better yet, maybe it would be best to break down the computer and sell the parts.
2. While the case you bought is beautiful (and functional), no "lay person" is going to pay $200ish just for the case. That is something you can appreciate (and maybe another builder), but no one else would. The average user probably thinks cases run about $25-50.
3. I would recommend you keep the keyboard, mouse, audio card and any other "extra" - while you see the value in them, an unsuspecting buyer will not. And you won't be able to convince them otherwise.

My guess : with the monitor, you may be closer to $600 - 700. Your best bet would be to try craigslist. I would suggest you calculate what you paid, then cut the price to 60%. Then, show that in your listing (e.g. I built this computer and the parts alone cost $1000. Will sell for $600).

Just so you know, I personally would probably give you $350ish for the computer and $100 for the monitor (maybe $125).

the problem is that for roughly a thousand dollars, someone could get a better machine online.

Your luck may vary, but I doubt you will be able to get more than $600-700 for it, unfortunate.

yea, but you know there are less tech-savvy users that would rather buy the computer in person that buy it online and have someone assemble it for them. or even just buy a pre-built computer online.

If my system is only worth the sum of it's parts ($875 not including what I would charge for labor), then that's all I would expect to get for it. However, I suffer no delusions, I could not get that much for it even though that's what the parts were priced at new. I can expect to reduce my system's worth by at least 30% due to it's being used.

Fortunately, I do not plan to sell this rig, but use it for an extended folding beast even after I upgrade to a faster machine.

But the problem is, even non-technical people are going to have serious reservations paying $1,000 to someone for a used computer. Not to mention that some of the parts will not be under warranty anymore (particularly the graphics card since BFG went bankrupt).

I still think $500 is a bit low though. I would say about $700-800 is possible for a non-technical person without a warranty.

Let me just say, we are trying to help and our estimates are just that - our best guess as to what a reasonable person would pay. We could be way off base; and you may find the one person that is willing to pay $1000+ for the system you have. If you can find them...great! In fact, I hope you do.

But in all honesty, you're the only one that can appreciate the value of the computer. Personally, I wouldn't pay $250 for a case - and I'm certainly not going to give you $200 for a used one. Nor would I give you a dime for that audio card. But that's just me - I don't see the value to those parts.

Case in point, I found fifteen (15) 23" monitors for under $200 on newegg. The one you have is $300 new. Why would I pay $200 (even $150 honestly) to buy a USED monitor when I can get a new one (that includes a warranty) for the same price - maybe less?

Also, I don't know you from Adam. Plus, you built the computer - what if you are the Dr. Kevorkian of computers? I don't know. Though I'm sure you're a great guy, I'm taking a huge risk by buying from someone I don't really know. And for me to take that risk, I want some incentive (i.e. a good deal) to do it.

My final suggestion: list the computer at the price point you want. If it doesn't sell, maybe toss in some old applications you don't need/want (or add a free AV and open office). Still no sale? Then you decide if you want to drop the price point, or keep the computer. It's really your call.
