I just received an email from "announcements@maximumpc.com" for an advertisement for "Goto Meetings".

Please tell me someone hacked the mailing list or something (which would actually suck too I suppose) and not that MPC has resorted to using our emails as another source of income....

The admins actually tested out an email to all members notifying them of the upcoming Chimp Challenge in the folding section. I'm sure this is the test email?

This had no mention of the magazine (other than the address), or any challenges / events / etc. It was just a full on advert for GotoMeeting....

Although I just took a closer look at it and all of the links in the email (which I havent clicked) all point to an address starting with
Code:
http://cl.exct.net  (put it in code so people wouldnt inadvertently click the hyperlink)

Maybe I jumped the gun on this... probably spam from some other site I used my address at and theyre just masking it as coming from an MPC address.

Can you PM the email to an administrator like Superchip64 or Satchboy so they can have a look and make sure nothing is out of the ordinary?

Something else good to know would be the email address they sent it from.

Yea, I just forwarded it to the comments email address.

The one I got came from "announcements@maximumpc.com"

I also did notice it had the following at the end of the email as well:

Again, the links pointing to the domain mentioned above.

O.o I just got it too! Oh, it's not spam from maxPC. How do I know this? They sent it to my Gmail account, but I have a hotmail account registered here. Something definitely is fishy.

Hey guys,

If you signed up for our mailing list, you also sign up for "Occasional marketing messages from our partners".

I'm not a fan, because we don't offer a way to opt-out of marketing messages without opting out of the newsletter. If you're unhappy with the occasional ad in addition to the newsletter, the most effective way to register your complaint is to unsubscribe from that ad. If you do that, we'll remove you from the list.

You know Will, that's funny! This is the first email I've received from MaxPC in a long time. How often should I be getting emails from your mailing list? When I say a long time, I mean months. Just curious.

Should also clarify that I don't mind emails like that, I understand you need advertising to pay for the great mag and keep our prices low.

You should get newsletters every other week. Check your spam folder.

Nope, not in my spam folder either. I check them all daily. Odd that I should get that one email today and not any others? Did you guys redo the email list lately and I need to renew my sub to it?

I received two copies of this email. One to my email address that I signed up for the newsletter with and one to the email address I used when I bought my subscription online.

If you've signed up in the last six months or so, you shouldn't have to do anything. Might want to sign up again though.

Goto Meetings, GoToMyPC, Carbonite, and a lot of other stuff are heavily pimped to the PC crowd via mailing lists. Even fills up the AM radio waves on political shows none the less. Heck, I even think Leo LaPorte pimps a sleep number bed.

Not speaking for the mag, but I do not believe these products being sent are a direct endorsement of the product or services. I'd take them, but with a grain of salt. If they seem appealing, the forums probably have a better method than the one's advertised...just my own shilling here ;)
