~60K users
~800K posts
~80K threads

An average of 10 posts per thread, and 1.3 posts per member.

Commport is/was far larger - over 4 times the members and posts - alas, that was long ago.

What's with the "Commport" everyone always talks about? I know it's the Old MPC forum or something of that nature, but was it a specific part like the "Alt.OS.Abode" is, or was that just the name of the forum?

Yeah .. when you allow anything to be posted, your forum grows old, tired and bloated. Stick a fork in the Commport and nothing but toxic political drivel leaks out now.

Don't ask. No one likes to talk about the mistakes they made in the past.

Yes - well, it's just commentary on the Nature of a particular sub-population. 50% of the Net seems to only care about politics and pron.

Ha. Not those tubes. My other tubes. Or perhaps pipes would be a better word.

Yeah good old Commport...

But this current database with 800K posts, how much space does it take up? 500 MB? 1GB? 10?

Based on the numbers Manta provided, assuming there are no images stored in the DB, it should size somewhere about 5-15GB.

That is based on general sizing with guesstimations of how much of the content that you see is being stored vs. external links.

Stats from a small phpbb forum I admin:

Number of posts: 44289
Number of topics: 1661
Number of users: 168
Posts per day: 51.16
Topics per day: 1.92
Avatar directory size: 1.47 MB
Database size: 42.83 MB
Gzip compression: OFF

Extrapolate that as you will... (We do have a limit of 500 PMs though, pretty high. I'd say the average inbox size for everybody is maybe 100 pms. I have 83% of the max in mine)

Edit: My really rough math says it is around 776 MB...

The forum doesn't support attachments and avatars are outside of the DB. Everything is pure post content (or should be).

Based on the 62K users and higher traffic here I am sticking with my extrapolation but going to narrow the estimate to closer to 5-8GB. True, it is all content, and not images, but if you look at the list sorted by post count we have 150,000 posts just on the first page, leaving 1254 pages uncounted.

My rough math is 150,000K (128MB), or 1K per post, for all the posts on that first page. The number declines after that but with 1200 more pages to go 5GB seems right.

Text or not, that is a lot of space. Either that or I am waaaayyyy off.
