I think that installing ad-block is easier.

This is why we can't have nice things, you damn monkeys :)

Seriously though, I feel that the "expensive" version of the magazine a killer deal at less than $3/issue, and the no disc version of the sub is even better at about a buck an issue. While we definitely appreciate the subscribers of the magazine, most sites that offer ad-free subs charge at least $5/month.

DG, based on Will's $5 figure, it would cost quite a bit more to deliver an ad-free website.

Think at least $35-60/year. You have to make up the extra lost revenue that is not gained from showing ads to the subscribers.

Staypuff, go to the main page of Maximum PC (http://www.maximumpc.com) click around a few times into a couple of stories and I think you will figure out what the OP is talking about ;)

Three to Five extra dollars per month for an ad-free site? This assumes there will be enough individuals out there willing to pay more for a magazine sub just to have an ad-free website. This would cause MaxPC mag to incur the following costs:

Tracking the individuals who have the "Premium" subscription.

Issuing those "Premium" subscribers a password to the Ad-Free site.

Producing an Ad-Free site that would require hosting on a separate server or, at the least, having a different address.

Hiring extra personnel to manage the above.

Having just an ad-free site wouldn't draw enough subscribers. The Mag would have to add additional content and services to increase the "premium" subscription marketing target audience.

Why go through all that trouble for a business model that WILL NOT see a profit? This is MaximumPC magazine. Her subscribers enjoy a hobby/lifestyle that means being well informed on how to maximize your computing dollars while achieving the highest performance possible. These individuals utilize free applications on a regular basis that get them what they desire and enjoy doing so. If you have any questions about those apps, see my first post in this thread.

Not trying to be rude DG, but an ad-free site for a "premium" subscription model just doesn't work fiscally. It ain't gonna happen IMHO. I don't even work for MaxPC and I can see why it won't work.

No the part where it makes you push the Skip Ad button. If you didn't get it, you didn't browse long enough :P

I'm not using any ad blocks at all, not a biggy. The ads they have are usually pushed off to the sides or small and unobtrusive. Not a big deal at all.

I just know I'm gonna look like some sort of corporate asskisser, but I have to say it: a company which puts out a dead-tree magazine AND puts up a free website for the benefit of all is quite generous. Future US and MPC don't have to put up a website, never mind an ad-supported one that's free.

I dunno... complaining about wanting an ad-free site almost sounds like complaining about the colors the admins pick out.

Who reads banner ads, anyway? LOL
