My problem isn't that Future Network has decided to slap ads at the top of the forums.

My problem is the content of those ads. "PC Pitstop scan" is exactly the kind of thing that we recommend against!

Does anyone know off the top of their head if spyware/malware is installed by clicking that and going through with it?

It doesn't look like it contains malware. It leads you to scan now place, but I didn't download the file. I might download it later and upload it to a virus scanning site to see what it is. (Also it doesn't say MaxPC recommends it, it says it's recommended but not by who). I'll check it later.

MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.)

I installed it.

Its hostageware. It finds the problems and then wants money to fix them.

I'll let you know how bad the unistall goes.

They included it on their CD. By the sounds of it MPC's never even tested it.

MPC CD wrote:
This software claims to have the ability to optimize your PC by removing unnecessary files from your hard drive, optimizing your internet connection, removing registry errors and tweaking windows settings.

Note the "claims"... Sounds like they were offered a hunk of cash to put it on there and never even looked at it?

Its does all that as near as I can tell. It just won't finalize it until you hork over the cash. Thus - HostageWare.

I had an AV product that did that to me once. Just once. Now they don't exist (ThunderBolt AV).

It (The app in question) unistalled fine - but I still need to check for residue.

One word: adblock :)

Adblock... been using it for sometime now.. love that extension... I have so many on my block list that I rarely see an ad anymore...
I usually right click it, choose "Adblock Image", then edit the address to read something like (using the banner here for example) http://ads.futurenetworkusa.com/*
the wild card allows for ANY image from ads.networkwhatever.com to be blocked, not just the one image.
wildcards are your friend :D

It doesn't bother me ..... yet, I don't have an ad blocker installed ... yet.

What bothered me, was that the Monarch link was not on the main web page of MPC any more.
