I see from the banned list that some members have been banned for (as it was described) starting threads that suck. I've also seen the mods here recently caution unruly members to refrain from starting threads that suck..."or else" and I was just wondering how you all define threads that suck.

Is it a mechanical issue? Or does it have more to do with the originating member being unpopular with the rank and file, and posting controversial subjects?

It has to do with the originating member continuiosly starting threads full of nonsense for attention.

Keyword - attention

I don't think "Hi Everyone" is a very controversial subject...

Things that can get a thread closed:

1) Degeneration into flaming with no substance
2) Degeneration into no substance period
3) Posting for the sole purpose of postcount++
4) Posting for the sole purpose of attention++
5) Trolling (posting for the sole purpose of baiting others into a conversation you have no intent of having as an adult)
6) Posting in the wrong folder
7) Duplicate posts

Additionally, when someone ends up on the banned list, it's likely for reasons other than the specific reference that ends up there. One user, for example, was warned in PM for starting flamewars in threads, and then continued to send a barrage of PMs that were completely inappropriate. They got banned for the PMs, but were actually on a fast track to banland for other reasons anyway. Straw that broke the camel's back, all that.

And... people really don't get banned that often.

PS: If we silenced dissenting opinions, do you think I would respond to your thread or delete it?

I'd also like to add this handy contribution from the Steam Forums that can also apply to this question.

We don't censor dissenting opinions here. We do ban people for being asshats.

If you dissent, but aren't an asshat, you're welcome here. If you're an asshat, there are lots of other forums around.

What about mainstreamers behaving like asshats? I think it's locally refered to as the Shark tank?...

I think I have the general gist of it, it's just the way you pair dissenters with asshats makes me wonder about non dissenters being asshats? Would it be fair to say that being an asshat is permitted to anyone who subscribes to groupthink?

No asshats. Period. Whether they're dissenters, or not dissenters.

From what I am able to observe, it seems like those who enjoy being unpopular, and troll to serve agony on the forum at large, seem to be the ones with the shortest lifespan.

Fair assessment?
