I know you guys have to make a buck, and I'm all for it.

That said, do you realize how irritating it is to have those big honking drop down ads at the top of the web/forum pages are??

I mean, for me at least, It seems that it is just natural after clicking on a tab at the top of your mag web page or here on the forum to bring your cursor straight down accross that add only to have half or all of the 1st links or reading material blocked until you close it. Or wait what seems like a half and hour for it to self close.

How about, on the forums at least, Moving that ad space to the left and all the forum links to the right. That way if you are realy interested in "Hostway" you can roll over it. If you have no interest in "Global Web Solutions", you can carry on smartly.

keeps the subscription costs down, take your choice. or use adblocker, or adblock plus. most of the regulars here use them, and they never see what you are talking about.

I get what you're saying though, and I also get what the OP is saying.

It does make me wonder if the person in charge of the ads previews everything. If not, he should be required to look at all the ads on his personal computer.

I've heard the editors say that they were trying to zap all the dropdown ads. I don't use ABP because its stealing from the site. MaxPC makes money off of ads as long as they're viewed- they don't have to be clicked on. Using ABP causes them to serve you with bandwidth without you paying for the services. It's more or less stealing. In fact, this is why a lot of sites are considering formatting their content like ads so that using ABP will block the entire site.

I agree with what spartacus is saying and that is why I normally don't complain about the adds. It's only when they get obnoxiously large or poorly placed.

It would seem that placing them as, for example the current Hostway ads, that sites are actually causing part of their problem. If notheng else find a way to limit the number of views per session. I mean when they become to bothersome they are forcing the viewer to use things like ad blocker.

The subscription costs for the magazine. The forums are sponsored by the Maximum PC magazine. If the subscription numbers go down, prices go up. If people continue to block the ads here, they may eventually have to charge for forum access or use subscription-based systems like other forums do.



I really doubt they do. Remember the editors and marketing/ad departments do not talk to each other. Marketing decides what type of ads to place and the web monkeys place the ads. The editors can complain and make the ads go away, but that's about it.

They probably don't review every ad (which is why there was a malware infestation ad going around a while back). They rely on the other companies to follow certain criteria when submitting the ads.
