Hey guys, I'm attempting to fix my buddies PC. It's an older computer, don't know too much about it, running Win98 (Non-SE) P3 1.13GHz 64MB PC100. Now the problem is with the video card. Upon start up there is an error/dialog box that comes up relating to the display adapter. (Sorry, didn't write it down) It says "Device cannot find any free I/O resources to use." I know there's not a lot of information here, but I was wondering if anyone would know how to solve this problem?

Edit: Intel 740-854 Win9x PC1.0a.3.1.1526 is what is showing in Device Manager.

Thanks!

Have you been swapping vidcards in/out? If so, check it is properly seated. While in there, check the ram is seated. Since you are now elbow deep in the guts, why not clear the CMOS? Only takes a couple of seconds and if the system is kind of old, the CMOS battery could be crapping out, which will corrupt cmos.

Go to vidcard maker's website and download latest driver.

Swap current card out if possible and see if problem persists. If it does, this points more towards the monitor.

Lotsa luck and let us know what happens.

Well
Since you are actually seeing an error message on the screen - thats a good sign lol

The real question is - is this a Windows error or do you see it when BIOS is starting up (Prior to the "Starting Microsoft Windows 98" screen)...

If its in Windows - Go Into Device manager (Right-Click Computer, Properties).
Find the video card. (Does it have a yellow Exclamation Point?) if so go into properties for the video card and see if its an IRQ conflict. Try to see if there is any way to resolve it there..

If that doesn't work OR if the error is more at BIOS level - go into BIOS and try to check your Video settings (don't use Shadowed Video RAM for example)... Try restarting
If that doesn't do it - follow White's advice for sure...

Also if there's an option in the BIOS that says "Reset Configuration Data", set that to enable before saving the BIOS and restarting.

I reread your post and I got the same error message about a year and a half ago.

I was trying to use my system board's onboard video along with a seperate AGP card and apparently they both needed the same system resources and in the end I wound up disabling the onboard video.

okay, i fixed the problem...for the most part. i reset all configurations in the bios. reseated everything - including ram. turned off the agp shadow setting. set the bios to look for agp first (it was defaulting on pci first) then i booted in safe mode, removed the drivers, and reinstalled them after a normal boot.

now my only problem is the case is an old generic beige case...very cramped up inside not alot of room to work..i noticed the periphrials looked as if they were completely seated, but upon closer inspection i noticed the case is pretty, for lack of better terms, poorly made. the motherboard is properly mounted, i know that for a fact. yet the cards seem to be seated at somewhat of an angle....mainly the video card. back to my main point, the case will not allow the agp card to be properly seated and i think this is what is causing the new problem of screen distortion. differenct colored 'blocks' (like the flashing cursor in dos programs) appear all over the screen. im going to take everything out and reseat everything without a case and hook it up to an extra power supply to see if it is actually the case causing the problems!

thanks for all the input! i greatly appreciate it.

p.s. sorry if this post isnt too readable, im in a rush - i have work soon. hehe.

thanks again!
