Hello,

Although Windows update is not telling me I need a new video driver or that one is available... I went out to ATI and found Catalyst drivers version 4.9 although it says "Installing a new driver is only recommended if you are having issues with your ATI product." which I am not having any known issues with 4.6 Was just wondering if this is the standard disclaimer they put on all dirvers or is this something new? I have a SAPPHIRE ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB has anyone had any problems with 4.9?

Kind of wary of updates at the moment as I am having a BIOS issues that may or may not have been caused by a recent flash update.

Jim

Also what's a good (free) over clocking utility that just offers fairly basic options for somone not looking to get into the mud too much with over clocking? Already added some heat sinks to the memory and increased the fans/venting to the video card. Not looking for drastic performance enhancement as I want to keep everything nice and stable.

windows update is terrible at giving you updated drivers for products. Never trust it. Always to the manufacturers website directly to find drivers.

And with that, you should be safe installing the drivers for your 9800. ATI just says that I think. I always keep my drivers updated and have not had a problem as of yet.

windows only reccomends updates for win certified drivers which may take months ati has a new front end that controls everything, ati catalyst control center.

Well ATI Catalyst Control Center - crashed and burned on my system. I did a system restore and just downloaded the 4.9 drivers from ATI without the new control center - and fired up Dawn of War, everything seems fine.

Hey you had asked for a free utility that does some basic overclocking on your vid card. Try using Powerstrip by EnTech Taiwan. I've used it on my Radeon 9800PRO 256 and it works fine. You just have to adjust the slider up or down to increase or decrease the overall speed of your card. Not bad for a softmod.

Did you install the .Net Framework from Microsoft first? The Control Center needs that to function properly.

I did not... don't recall reading anything that said I needed to install something else first. Well before I make the effort again - what does the new control center let you do? Does it have over clocking options?

Do you have a link for the .net framework? Let me go out to google and try and find it.

The Microsoft® .NET Framework Software Development Kit (SDK) version 1.1 includes everything developers need to write, build, test, and deploy .NET Framework applications—documentation, samples, and command-line tools and compilers. You must install the .NET Framework Redistributable Package version 1.1 prior to installing the .NET Framework SDK.

So I need to intsall both of these to use the new control panel?
