 Post subject: PCI-E lanes and video cards

I know that there is a slight hit in performance for a video card going from x16 to x8, but could a video card run on x4, and if it can how bad could the performance get?

depends on the card. Only high end gpu's running in triple/quad SLI/CF setups really stress the limit of the PCIe lanes, but even then, that's why they have the bridges to help mitigate this.

Even running modern 580's in 8x/8x, you will only see a 1-3% drop in performance compared to full 16x lanes.
