Maximum PC

I have not run into this problem before, until i started installing 11.2 and higher. When i install the new catalyst software, it warns me that the screen will flicker during the driver install. it always flickers, and then goes back to me being able to see the desktop again. since installing 11.2 and higher (i am running 11.7) my screen flickers, but doesn't kick back to the desktop.

i do not know hoe far along in the install it is at this point, wait maybe 5 minutes, then press the reset button on my pc to reboot. normally it asks me if i want to reboot after installation, but i don't see my desktop after the flickering.

I normally have my eyefinity grouped when installing when it happens, but i tried reinstalling with eyefinity ungrouped, and it still happens.

Windows 7 x64
12GB ddr3 RAM, in triple channel
2x 5870s in crossfire ( DVI + DVI + VGA/DP )
Running (possibly incomplete) Catalyst 11.7

Uninstall all AMD software including the installer itself. Use an app like Ccleaner to tidy up your registry. Disconnect all your monitors save one, and reboot. Try re-installing 11.7 from there using the single monitor. If it works all you have to do is reconnect, and re-group your displays.

If it does work as suggested, is that an issue on my computer or the driver install package wiggin' out on the eyefinity setup?

That's a good question. My gut instinct would be driver issue, but really the only way to tell for sure would be to try installing an archived driver. If the problem started with 11.2, you could install 11.0 to verify.

I found it has to do with the way you uninstall/install a video driver. Windows doesn't get all the bits and pieces, plus most people don't kill their anti-virus when installing and uninstalling any drivers. The anti-virus can and does interfere with with both the install and uninstall of any driver or program. It has happened to me. So here is how I install a video driver:

Shut off the anti virus.

Uninstall the video driver and say no to reboot.

Delete the video driver folder...Nvidia or ATI and empty the recycle bin.

Download, install and run either Driver Cleaner Pro 1.5 or Driver Sweeper and set the program for what ever you are using...Nvidia or ATI and clean the hard drive. I also run Ccleaners registry section to get anything left. Now reboot the machine.

Say cancel to both popups.

Shut off the anti virus.

Install the new driver, reboot as required.

You should now have a clean install of your new video driver.

I have used this method for years and never had a problem with the new video driver I loaded.

Thanks for the tips. today, i downloaded 11.8, and installed it on a single monitor, because i had just installed a cpu cooler also today. with the single screen, it flickered as it should, but this time it definitely went back to the desktop. So i think installing the drivers with grouped monitors might be borking it in some way.
