Hello everyone.
So, someone gave me parts of an old alienware desktop (2005 build), and in it was an old GeForce 8600. PCIe slot.

In my main computer I have GeForce 560 video card. So I was wondering if I'll get any performance boost if I use the 8600 in SLI or maybe as dedicated PhysX card?

The only thing its really good for now is folding. Can't do async SLI on different cards and the 8600 is not fast enough for physix; even the 8800 is almost too slow for physix.

nvidia claims any 8 series card with 256mb of memory will do physx.

and ea says the min requirement to play battlefield 3 is an 8800 GT as well... if you consider 15 fps at 800x600 to be playable. And that's with a modern i7 980x. lol

Well I did some research, and it seems only very few games use PhysX anyway, so it'd be just a waste of PCIe slot.

Physix is also known as the "post processing garbage filter" since in most games it just adds flying garbage, debris and extra particles. Really doesn't add a ton of realism that they made out to believe; not what Physix was going to change from those demo videos years ago with beyond half-life 2 havok physics interactions on a huge scale. I mean we are at the point where it might make sense for them to just dedicate one core on the cpu for phsyix instead of saying you need a 2nd gpu.

CPU Physx is sub-par. Personally, I would stick it in your main machine and have it fold in the background. You can also use it as a Physx card later if you wish.

^cpu phyisx is only subpar because they don't code it for the cpu. Its like a console port; doesn't fit well.

Then why would you recommend CPU Physx when the performance is lousy?

Having an nVidia card for Physx is the best way if you do intend to play as such. I for one love the more realistic atmosphere it gives. Play any of the new Batman's with high Physx. It's beautiful.

I didn't... I said we are at the point of where it should be... cpu physix doesn't run the same. They don't dedicate a core or even two to just physix.

And yes, I have both batmans... still garbage physix.
