I have a computer that won't power on anymore. I tried a new power supply. I was wondering if there is a way you can determine if the motherboard or processor is bad. I unplugged everything from the motherboard and removed the ram.

Edit:

Asus M2N4-SLI motherboard
AMD Processor - Socket 940 , don't know which one yet
4 - AeNeon 1GB 2Rx8 PC2-5300U memory sticks
Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS 512mb DDR
Okia 600W ATX psu
Windows XP - I think

The new power supply i tried is a Starpower 450W

I unplugged the power cables from the MB and with the cd drive and hd connected to the psu i shorted the green and black wire. Both drives powered on.

The MB has a SB Power Led which lights up when i turn the psu switch to on position. There are no other indications of anything powering on (fans, no beeps, etc) when i try powering on the pc.

Hope the extra info i included saves us some time. The computer is a friends and pc was working for a few months.

Thank you
Brian

Please supply the specs...motherboard, cpu, ram, psu, video card, operating system...ectra.

Does it make any beep codes?

Leave the ram in or it won't post.

Updated post above

I also have a multi meter if there was a way to determine which of the 2 are bad (MB or CPU).

Ok, i found the problem. Some capacitors on the video card were blown. Don't know why i didn't remove the video card sooner... like before even posting on here.

Well my question still stands though. Is there a way you can determine for sure the MB or the processor are bad ? I would hate to buy a new motherboard and find out its the processor or vise versa.

Pull the video card and see if you get any beep codes when you turn the pc on.
