Maximum PC

Hey all,
I am going to be buying a new video card in the next day or two and can't seem to decide between the GTX 460 1gb and the GTX 470. Is the extra coin for the 470 worth it or would the 460 1gb be the better option? Right now there is a gtx 460 1gb for $170 at newegg

I game at 1920 x 1200 and don't really want to sacrifice any graphics options. I am currently getting around 25-45 fps in BFBC2 and would like to see it go higher (some intense moments are choppy.) The GTX 260 i have has been going strong for two years, and i'd like to see the next card i get last at least that long. Which is the better option? HELP!!


System specs:
i7-930 @ 2.8Ghz, but i can overclock it easily. I just put it back to stock to keep it cooler.

If you want to run on high settings with some AA and AF I would go with 6870. You should also consider the 6950 if you have the money because almost all of them can be unlocked to a 6970 making them an amazing value.

Good suggestions. I guess i really haven't looked for the ATI equivalent to the cards i've been looking at. The only thing that worries me though is that i've heard a lot of people complain about ati cards and how they have problems with different games. Is this even an issue anymore or what? I've never purchased ATI before so i don't know anything about them.

No more an issue than with Nvidia.

That's not entirely true, ATI has issues with older games. I can't get mine to play the original COD, for example, and many Q3A engine games (other than Q3A itself, interestingly...) have problems running on them.

I can run the original CoD on my ATi system just fine... Nvidia has its share of old games that don't work right too... I have more Nvidia systems than ATi systems in my house, and both have given me a fair share of headaches.

I have the eVGA GeForce GTX 470 card, got it over the summer. I personally love the card. I've been using nVidia cards for about 5 years now, I love them. Thats not to say I didnt enjoy the ATi line in the past, because I've used them also, but my last string of GPUs have been nVidia.

Aside from that GPU, I have 8GB DDR3 Vengeance SDRAM, AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE, OCZ 850W PSU, and a Seagate 1TB HD, I have to say my rig kills games. The only games where I can't seem to get a steady 45-60 FPS all the time are the usual suspects like Crysis and GTA IV, games that have poor coding. But with that card, believe you me it will do you justice for most, if not all, games. I just got Crysis 2 and I'm having a blast playing it at 1920x1080 with all settings maxed out, and this game runs at a steady 45-60 FPS with ease. IMO, if you can get the extra cash I personally would go after the newer 500 series GeForce cards but if you can get a good deal on the GTX 470, go for it. Microcenter by me has it for I think around $205 after mail in rebates and such, thats a good deal. Good luck!

I would stick with nvidia better driver support and better all the way around.

I would stick with current threads rather than bumping old ones for no reason. It'll keep mods from having to lock threads.
