So I bought an ASUS EAH5850. It has two power connections on the card. One six pin and one eight pin.

I got lots of six pin connections from my PSU but I didn't see an 8 pin plug. I went to the local Fry's Electronics to pick one up.

After two visits to the electronic store I realized that this eight pin connection is really a 6 + 2 pin plug!

well, its nice that PSU makers make a 6+2 pin power connector - so far i have not been in need of the +2 pins, but it's always nice to know they are there, since i do not replace power supplies often. also, since the +2 is usually connected to the cable as in the picture, seems like it would be obvious that it is an 8-pin, as well.

was the power supply box misleading by saying it had only 6-pin connectors?

No, the PSU was not misleading I just failed to add 6 + 2 to get 8.

I asked myself during the process, "Hey, I wonder what those 6 + 2 plugs do?"

Then I would turn to the 8 pin plug and say, "Where am I going to get an 8 pin plug?"

Finally I went to the electronic store and found an adapter labeled "8 pin". The adapter had the same 6 + 2 config. I felt pretty dumb and walked away... Knowing I had the proper plug the entire time!
