I'm trying to help a friend with his second hand Dell 4550 and hope someone can help me with tracking down his mobo via the serial number.
I've tried for help via Dell Live chat but that is like pounding my head with a brick. They tell me the system is max'ed at 1 GB of PC3200 DDR SDRAM but I have looked both physically and via the BIOS and the system has 1 Dimm of 512 MB DDR PC2700 at a clock of 333.

The Crucial memory configurator gives the system a 2 GB max of PC2700.

So now I am trying to find a way to use the S/N of the mobo to find out the actual max of Ram. I doubt Dell actually makes the boards but I do not know who they have under contract.

If you can help I would appreciate it. Thx.

Have you looked at the mobo for a sticker (and cleaned some dust out)?

Also, I wouldn't put more money into that computer, but save up for a new build.

If his system is active use WinAudit on the system.

It's free and non-invasive, no install required.

After the scan is complete, the serial number of the 'baseboard' is under System Management - Baseboard.

You can also use programs like Everest to find info, but you have to install it first.

You should be able to plug the service tag number into the dell support site and get the model number of the board. From there it should be pretty quick to find out the specifics.
