On the back of rounters what is the COM port for?

Its prolly a serial connection for console access...

or...

some routers include a comm port for dial access for backup in the event of a failure on the primary link

You can access the router using ethernet (192.168.0.1 or whatever address)... or use your PCs serial port via the COM port on the router. Sometimes the COM port gives access to configuration options that are not available to the ethernet based interface. As mentioned in another post, it usually allows you to access the router if ethernet access crashes. And, it is used to upgrade the router firmware.
