Wired
Setup one (typical)
Two LAN cards (I recommend Netgear)
A hub or a router - the router is useful if you want to share a high-speed connection in the future
2 cables

Setup 2 (oddball)
You still need the LAN cards, but you could get a cross-over cable (instead of a patch cable). I really don't recommend this, as it limits you - both the distance of the cable, but more importantly the fact that you can only have two computers on such a network. With a hub/router you can have several computers. You may want this if you have friends come over for a LAN party.

Wireless
Wireless cards (Again, I recommend Netgear)
A wireless hub/router/access point

How old is your computer? If it was made in the last three years (the motherboard, at least), I can't imagine it not having a network card, possibly even integrated into the board.

I don't know if this is typical, but I've had many troubles configuring networks where wireless and wired computers are involved. Unless you must, I recommend sticking with either wireless or wired, but not a combination.

Peace,
Jacob
