Hi, I just set up a wireless network wtih a Linksys WRT54GS router and WMP54GS card and am having probs in getting good signal. The distance is not that far and wanted to know if anyone has any tricks before I go out and get a high DB antenna...

besides the antenna, try moving the wireless router around your place and see if that helps at all.

thanks, I have been doing that but the router is in my home office and the layout doesn't allow for much changing. I'm going to get longer CAT 5 cable to see if I can get the router near the door, away from the plaster wall which I read may impact signal.

I dont have a 2.4 ghz phone but the room where the other desktop is near the side of my house close to my neighbor, who may have such a phone. Could this affect it?

thanks

Possibly I can go down my street with my cordless phone before losing the signal. Also newer garage door openers can screw with a connection too if your neighbors have one of them.

Just for reference, I got two 6dBi Antennas off eBay for $14 a piece which gave my laptop a huge signal boost.

Dont mean to revive an old topic, but damn... look at the connection speed!

This is up from the normal 11Mbps/Low I was getting before! :)

Did you invest in some antennas?

WE used to get the same problem on my fathers laptop. Sometimes It would kick onto some1 elses network on our neighborhood instead of our own, oit was strange, and that caused really low speeds
