i have a SoftV92 Data Fax Modem. and im sure its 56k! i dont know why but its been going down to speeds of 20~26k a lot. even right now! the highest ive ever seen it probably is 50k. my system is probably 1 and a half years old. pentium 4 2.4 around 128mb ram etc. im not sure if it could somehow be related to where i live or something.

answers would be nice.

before i switched to cable my "56k" connection never ever once went above 20k. either you have shitty phone service or dirty phone lines in your house or going to your house.

could be your local loop (phone line). Try another modem, or take your PC to someone elses house and try from there.

having other things plugged into the same phone jack can also lower your performance

it depends on what number ur connecting on. long ago when i had dial up, i was going at 28 k, but then they had a new numbers access list, one with support of v92 x2 i believe, and then i started connecting at 49- 57 k

One guy I know had really bad line noise but there was nothing he could do about it because where he lived all the phone lines ran underground.

What happened was the noise on the line was interrupting the carrier detect between the two modems causing annoying occasional disconnects and low connect speeds.

Personally I've never connected lower then 44kbps and usually averaged either 49333bps or 50666bps with the max being 52000bps. That was connecting from New York, Virginia, Florida, and Australia.
