WOW!! Didn't know you could do that. So how does that work?

I know people still broadcast them and that there are apps that will pull them for you. I just don't. It's like locking a car door. A thief will be able to get in if he really wants to but I'm still gonna lock the door.

Exactly how to do it would probably vary depending on your brand & model of router. It's not much but it a sliver of extra protection that helps keep honest people honest ;)

In the case of my router it's pretty simple, just log in from my web browser, type in my password, then go to the apropriate page:

For a little extra security I dissable both the wireless connection & remote access to the web utility so if someone does manage to find my SSID, hack my 32 character password & log into my network, they can't log into my router & change things!

But I hate this router for one reason, I cannot dissable wireless completely, like I can with my WRT300-N... which I'll be going back to now that I've proven to my ISP that my router isn't the cause of my drop-outs...

Thanks for the info. I must confess though that I still don't get how you are actually hiding the SSID beyond disabling the broadcast? :?

That's all, just disabling the broadcast. But as mentioned before, people with the right software can still find the network even though there's no SSID being broadcast.

Oh oh oh, I got you now. I misunderstood your earlier post, I thought you somehow got a NULL value as your SSID name. But yeah I disable the SSID broadcast too even though, as you say, there are ways to get it. My point was just that I still do that even though it's possible to get the SSID.

Just figured a sniffer might pass it by for other targets. PC's are more interesting.

The schedule is pretty cool too. It can turn off the radio and turn it back on for set periods of times. Pretty good since the only wireless is in the garage. Only need that box to send and receive WU's, or can disable the schedule if it's an all nighter and need it for looking up repair manuals.

Exactly my thought. I have two neighbors with unsecured and broadcasted networks. If someone really wants into mine, they're going to get in, but why bother with those two open ones available?

SSID: CohIBatSPQR

I'm a slight Roman history geek ;p Feel free to PM if you can figure it out.

The only appropriate SSID to broadcast in a family oriented, relatively tight knit neighborhood in populated suburban NJ who "look out for each other":

I_eat_babies

We just moved here too, so anyone who regularly checks what's broadcasted around here may assert just which family the SSID belongs to! hehe

At my old apartment, it was "Maxxx Luv's House of Emotion." Mostly to unnerve the neighbors.

it was the first thing to come to mind when I set it up, one of my neighbors named his staythefuckoffmynetwork(or something like that). I found that funny because he knew how to change the ssid, but didn't know how to password protect it..hehehe
