Ok as it says in the title i have a net gear wireless router but I for now use my modem to give me my 802.11 signal. trouble is walls and distance and no option given living conditions to move anything for a better signal makes me think if theres a way to turn an otherwise unused router into a means to boost the signal and performance. Bascially I know the walls in particular as i go through more of them are making the data rates sluggish even with signals i normally might get good performance out of. Any ideas are welcome. Oh and side note running cable through the apartment is out of the question room mates won't go for it.

You might be able to turn that Netgear into a repeater using DD-WRT. I say might because I personally haven't tried it. Nor do I know anyone that has with a Netgear. However, a friend used it to do that to a Linksys.
There is a forum on the DD-WRT site where you might be able to dig up an answer.
