I presently spend a significant of time on a "true" 128 bit encryted financial software program. I am behind a hardware & software firewalls, and I use up to date virus detection.
Furthermore, I have a 10 character password, WPA enabled WiFi.

It is unclear to me whether I am compromising my security if I log on to an non-encrypted web site while the encrypted site remains active.

A non-encrypted website simply means that all data flow is in plain view. If you sent "Hello website!" in plaintext and the website sent "Hello computer!" back, anyone who is sniffing the line between your network and the remote network will see it as is. Encrypted websites require encryption for both inbound and outbound traffic. Thus in the above, if someone were sniffing the traffic, they can't tell what it is. It has nothing to do with your network security.

The only time you have to worry about non-encrypted websites is if they're asking for sensitive information.

As stated above, using the unencrypted site while logged into the financial website won't compromise the security of the connection; however, it may open you up to client-side attacks, such as cross-site scripting attacks, so you should at least be careful in what sites you visit while logged into the financial website.
