Hi guys,
It's time for me to upgrade to an N router. I don't have any device in my home network that operates in the 5 GHz band, so I don't think I need a dual band router.
My current router is a Linksys WRT54G. It has given me great service for 5 years, but it doesn't meet my requirements anymore. Having said that, here are my 3 main requirements:
1) Smooth HD playback. My router can't play HD video files from my digital camera (.mov). It chops... Other HD formats such as .mp4 play fine.
2) Faster file transfer speeds. I have a NAS and would like to be able to transfer my files faster from and to my NAS.
3) Port Forwarding entries. The firmware of my router only allows me to forward 10 entries which are not sufficient for me. I have a testing environment which requires me to forward ports for several apps: FTP, SMTP, Apache, IIS, MySQL, MSSQL, Remote Connections, etc.
Ideally, the new router should support open source firmware such as DD-WRT and Tomato. I have not used them before, but read about them and I'm aware of their potential. I'm looking at these 3 models:
