Maximum PC

My old trusty $30 D-link router from 1999 died on me after getting a 50% packet loss so I had to replace it with a more modern router. What did I choose? A Netgear RT311 gateway router from circa 2000!

Still in it's shrink wrap that I got back in the day for free when Nortel bellied up; stuck it in a closet and figured I would use it one day... who knew it would be 12 years later?

I had to find an old enough computer to use the included 9 pin serial cable to use the com port and telnet connect to manage, configure and update the firmware. Brings me back to the days of working with cisco routers.

That would actually be RS-232. Telnet goes over IP, not a serial port.

see so old, I don't even remember! haha

I think its just funny finally using the damn thing; sitting next to a few 56k, 33k and 14.4k modems still in their shrink wraps. Perhaps one day I'll use those too!

Grab a Cisco or Adran router to simulate the POTS system and fire those modems up!

Yes, as a matter of fact I do do stuff like this just for fun.

For some odd reason, I woke up today and went "maybe I should try a token ring network... " hummm.............. lol
