I had a machine like this.
I went into Device Manager and just disabled the wireless card. I was able to leave it in, because it stayed disabled when I rebooted. Same with a 56k modem.
Recheck your BIOS to see if you'd disabled the onboard LAN... re-enable it if you did. Then reboot and see if XP detects it.
You also may need drivers for the onboard LAN. Sometimes it's included with chipset drivers, other times it's separate.
