Is there any major difference and benefits from getting the actual hardware (routers, switches, etc..) or are router simulators fine?

I went through mine back in 2002 so a little while ago. I did pick up a cheap cisco router on ebay at the time to play with as well as a 3com. but used mostly simulators.

I think most sims work alright they generally have the OS's to the different devices spot on in how they function and are significantly cheaper than buying a host of routers.

good luck.
if you want it now and are preparing don't wait. do it. all these years later I couldn't imagine having to take it.
