Ok a few year ago back in the dialup ages we added a line so we could receive phone calls and be on the internet. Now, after we got cable we canceled the 2nd line. Now a few phone jacks in my house are pointing towards the non existent 2nd line. Is there a way I can switch them to the main line myself?

you have to look at your main line wiring at an existing jack and use the same pair on your 2nd line. If both pairs are wired, the center two is your main so just swap the inner pair with the outer pair on the 2nd line jacks.

If you are lucky, you have cat5 wiring and can use that for your home networking! But that is if your place is less than ~7 years old or so. Older wiring schemes use the 4-wire phone cable.

ya open up the phone jack. you should see four colored wires (red, green, yellow, and black???). i cna't remember which colors, but two are for your main line and two are for your second line. swap the sets of wires.

POTS (Plain old telephone system) needs only 2 of the 4 wires in the phone cord. If you look closely at the phone cord end and the jack opening (where the phone cord goes) you should see where the wires should match up. It's really easy to figure out. And yes, you should definitely do this urself since it would be rather costly to have the telephone guy come and do it.

Most likely, when they installed your new line, they also installed a new punchdown block. This will most likely be in the basement (if you have one of course). you should be able to see both (the old and the new) next to each other.

The punchown is simply a corss-connect point where the phone company runs the 2-wire service into your house and then cross-connect all your phones to that service.

If you look at it carefully (like the others have said) you should be able to see how they connected the lines...remove the copper pair from the new punchdown and reterminate it onto the punchdown your main line resides on...

or you can try the other two pair run directly to the jack(like mentioned above).that's even easier...it really depends on how they installed your second line.
