plug 'em in, if there is no DHCP server or home router they will be 169.254.x.x

for details check out the FAQ "Setting up a basic network"

Simple thing you can do...

Instea of farting around with a DHCP server, Assign each machine the following...

Machine 1
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Machine 2
192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Machine 2
192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Then plug them on. At that point, you should be just looking at having the machines chatter at each other for a sec to show up in the Network Neighbothoof or you can just hit them by IP via a \\192.168.0.X (whatever machine you want to hit)

You could also poke through the XP CD, and install NetBEUI on each machine and just plug them on. A little more work if you ask me. You may also want to setup user accounts on each machine for the individual users o make file sharing a little less thought proviking.
