I just finished my first custom build and I decided to install a wireless pci adapter to limit the number of cables that I would have to use.

Anyway, my signal strength is excellent and my rig is putting out 54 mbps. All of my downloads (when my browser is working) are super fast, yet when I start IE8, FireFox or Chrome, all of the browsers run incredibly slow. I'm not sure if it is a firewall issue or some other sort of connection problem, but any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Visit SpeedTest.net and let's see what it reports. Let's get an objective reading on your browser performance.

on my laptop it says I'm downloading at 25mbps and uploading at about 3mbps, so that's pretty fast...

...on my PC however, it says im downloading at 3 mbps and an error comes up when the upload phase starts.

what gives?

What type of speeds do you get w/ a WIRED connection from that same desktop machine? I want to verify it's related solely to wireless and not a more general problem w/ the machine.

I would also run IPCONFIG from both the laptop (w/ wireless) and the desktop (w/ wireless) and compare them. Let's make sure they're configured similarly.

Please provide some more details as well about make/model of router, wireless client adapters, even the new build, etc. I need to get a better feel for the components, network topology, etc., something might get my attention. And some information about the OSes in use, versions, etc.

Btw, are you running any anti-virus, malware, etc., on that desktop?

If you plug the computer back and use it wired does the problem go away? Are you using the most updated drivers downloaded from the manufactures website? Did you install any extra software that came with the Wireless card? If you did try uninstalling all the extra software and use only the driver.

Do you know if you are running add-on's within your browsers? This can really slow down browsing, even with a fast connection.

Cheers,

You should be able to just install the new driver, then reboot.
