I think Microsoft has made something that might rival Google in search capabilities. What do you think?

Once a product name becomes a verb ("You should google that"), it is very hard to reduce its mindshare.

Agreed. However, I wouldn't call bing doomed. If it indeed does bring significant new features to the table, or if it starts giving out free services that would otherwise cost money, there's always a chance. Not to mention the advertising campaign that M$ has launched for bing...

I know this thread is two months old, but I am bumping it for a reason:



I do not believe Bing will EVER rival Google. They are two completely different entities -- Google is a 'Search' engine whereas Bing is a 'Decision' engine.

Case in point, I wanted to find a portable air conditioner for my house. I decided to try Bing and see what it would do. It produced a page of portable air conditioners that I wanted to look into. When I found the size, BTU Rating and functions I wanted, I looked to see what Bing recommended: Portable Air Conditioners

Being the skeptic that I am, I did a generic "Review" search on Google: Reviews: Portable Air Conditioners

Needless to say, I was impressed with Bing. If anything, Google will be used more because of Bing, not replaced by it!

Bing is the next best thing to Google. I've been playing with both, doing comparisons, and Bing is more commercial - wanting to connect you things that are related. Google gets you more consistent answers...but we don't know that much about Bing and most people have simply adjusted to how Google performs and returns searchs - we're trying to impress the same logic on Bing.

I find myself resorting to using both now, and I couldn't say that with Yahoo or any other search engine. Bing is a significant jump forward from the Live search engine, and I believe it will compete with Google if it's tweaked a bit.

Give Bing a chance. It'll surprise you.

Bing seems to improve search results. Google is now returning a broader range of search results (images, videos, crap like that). I want my searches to return more refined results. The more specific the results, the less I have to sort through the mess of unrelated websites that are listed only because they hired and SEO to create 40,000 links to their site. Google lists sites based on how much money the site has to spend on SEO generated links. Yahoo and Bing tend to list sites based more on their content. That is what I want. I don't want to search for "baseball stats" and find out that Amazon and ebay are selling 2,000 books on "baseball stats." Then, when you go to those sites, you find that 99% of those books relate to "baseball" not "baseball stats." I'm ranting, but I hate sorting through the crap search results.
