Does anyone know anything about fiber phone service? I live in SD and our telephone company has been running fiber cables around our county. Apparently they convert the fiber signal into a phone signal and patch the fiber into the existing telephone network (if this doesn't make sense say so and I'll rephrase it).

I was wondering if anyone else has this at their house, and if you could get a fiber line to your house and get Fios internet.

FiOS is fast. Very fast.

If you can afford it and you want lots of bandwidth .. get it.

I've heard a few horror stories about FIOS phone service.

The kind where they remove the POTS line completely.

This might sound okay, but what if E911 doesn't work?

Even if you turn off your old line the ability to call 911 stays intact.

If you do get FIOS, make sure they don't remove the copper phone line from your yard/property!

Check to see what all installation consists of. If they guarantee to run new lines in your house with the install, do that instead, especially if your phone lines are old.

I think, from what I understand, that they disconnect the main line to the telephone office and you connect to the office through the fiber line, but they leave the old copper telephone line to your house intact

If this makes any difference my telephone provider is GoldenWest. They came around and connected us all to fiberoptic, whether we wanted to or not.

My only concern is that if the power goes out (we have blizzards, tornados, and ice storms where I live) that I won't have telephone service because of the conversion from fiber to regular telephone line takes electricity to run. It has batteries in it, but I don't know how long they can power it.
