Now THERE's some processing power! Up to 256 teraflops of 64-bit goodness.

Mmmm, 1 teraflop PS3.

I linked to this topic a few weeks ago. I find it very interesting that maybe the gaming world is now possibly taking the lead in a few areas.

128 cpu system (Itanium, opteron, or xeon, or power 4) < 1 teraflop today

5000 something Itanium 2 cpu system = 60 something teraflops (i believe)

it just really pisses me off that they would waste something so powerful into a PS3.

IBM is really investing into Cpu making, i am not suprised they wont go into the desktop world to compete with Intel.

Also, even current roadmaps on Intel and amd do not show any signs of producing such a powerful cpu (2 cores cant = 1 teraflop or even near it)

maybe they will...but its all about the benjamins! Think about it...how many PS2 have sold thusfar? If IBM supplies ALL The CPUs for the PS3 thats alot of cabbage with no competition (since I believe they only use a single supplier for PSx CPUs)...as opposed to trying to penetrate an already solid market of Intel and AMD, that's an unkown.
