Grisoft has announced that come the end of the year, support for Free version of the AVG software (version 6.0) will end. This means there will be no more antivirus updates for version 6.0.

A new version is currently in beta and will be released in November. Please check with Grisoft's Free AVG website for more information.

Nice heads up. Glad to see they're updating the free version rather than dropping it.

Yup,
They just seem to be updating the engine to a newer version - which rocks majorly! (much like One4u2c had stated before hehe)

This even raises my respect level for them even more!

Cheers,
2athal (look one - I can do it too :P)

I still wonder why they would give a free edition when they have a AVG 7.0 that people pay for. The free one is still not the best compared to the one that you pay for or even better yet with another Antivirus. I find that Panda Antivirus is the best one Iv seen in a long time.

But with that I do have a secondary scan I use is with NOD32. After those 2 scans I have nothing left. But with AVG I scan and then scan with either Panda or NOD32 and there is sooo much left from their scans.

But Its good for free I guess. But if you want to be sure or better protected then go with one that you pay for even the AVG 7.0

From what I've read, the new Free version uses the 7.0 scanning engine, and a few other features.

I'm currently using the Beta on my home PC, and the new UI is nice, but it won't allow disabling automatic updates. Not a big issue, I just don't like my computers doing anythnig without my permission.

Otherwise it's the same good old AVG - unobtrusive, compatible and minimal sysem hog!

The full version of the new Free edition is now up on the AVG site. Something I've noticed already is that there's no more of the running around with a registration process and getting links and keys in email - it's just a stand-alone executable now. Me likey.

I sorta like the new verison, but I dont like the fact that they took away the scheduling options and made it to were u had to get the pro version to use it.

The new free version (7.0) updates a LOT faster, all in all looks more professional and seems to work better, all in all.

One thing I hated about the old 6.0 version was that when the auto-protect found a virus, it didn't clean it. It instead told you to "run the scanner" which required you to scan your whole drive in order to find the stupid virus. I (thank god) didn't get the chance to find this out yet, but have they fixed that in 7.0 ? Or was this purposely done to make us buy the professional version?
